Jennies Volleyball completes perfect road trip with 3-1 win at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. --
The 21st-ranked Jennies Volleyball team completed a perfect western road trip with a 3-1 win over Fort Hays State on Sunday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Jennies won 25-12, 19-25, 25-17, 25-17.

The Jennies (18-8, 15-3 MIAA) raced out of the gates scoring 13 of the first 14 points of the first set as they cruised to the 25-12 win. The Tigers (13-14, 7-11 MIAA) returned the favor in set No. 2 as they scored the first five points to grab the early lead. Carly Sojka got the Jennies on the board with a kill and UCM closed to within 14-11 midway through the set. Fort Hays State pushed the lead back to five, but the Jennies scored three straight points to pull within 18-16. FHSU scored seven of the final 10 points to win set two 25-19.

Set three was close in the early going, but kills from Kourtney Thompson, Sojka and Haley Thompson pushed UCM in front 5-2 and they never trailed again in the set. The Tigers got to within 14-10, but an 8-3 run by the Jennies pushed the lead to 22-13 and they went on to win the set 25-17.

The fourth set was much of the same as H. Thompson, Sojka and K. Thompson had three straight kills to open up a 4-0 lead for UCM. The Tigers used a 6-2 spurt to tie the set, but kills by Maddie Jones and Mackenzie Harding put the Jennies in front for good. UCM went on to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

Sojka recorded another double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs while hitting .333, she also added three blocks. H. Thompson finished with 14 kills and seven blocks while hitting .323. K. Thompson finished with 51 assists and 13 digs, while adding seven kills.

Annie Reilly (31), Becca Blaise (20)  and Shelby Winkelmann (14) combined for 65 digs.

With the win, UCM moves into a first place tie in the MIAA standings with Nebraska-Kearney with four games to play. The Jens are back in action Friday night, Nov. 7 hosting Missouri Southern at 7 p.m. at the UCM Multipurpose Building.
