Jennies Volleyball takes down No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. --
The 21st-ranked Jennies volleyball team went on the road and took down No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-9) on Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center. The win improves UCM's record to 17-8 and 14-3 in the MIAA.

Set one was a back and forth battle through the early going before the Jennies grabbed control with an 8-2 run midway through the set. UCM closed out the first set at 25-15 to take the early lead. Nebraska-Kearney (23-3, 15-3 MIAA) responded in set two with a 25-18 win to tie the match. The set was tied 6-6, but UNK took a 7-6 lead and never trailed again as they tied the match at 1-1.

Set three went to the Jennies by a 25-16 score. The Jennies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the set and never looked back en route to taking a 2-1 lead. The Lopers came back to win set four and tie the match to force a winner take all fifth set. UNK broke an 8-all tie and never trailed again in the set.

The fifth and deciding set was tight in the early going before UCM grabbed control at 11-8 with three straight points. The Lopers scored a point to get within 11-9, but UCM closed out the match with four straight points.

Three Jennies finished with double figure kills, five with double figure digs and three players recorded double-doubles. Haley Thompson and Carly Sojka led UCM with 14 kills each and Becca Blaise finished with 12. Sojka added 18 digs for a double-double and Blaise had 10 for a double-double. Kourtney Thompson had a match-high 44 assists and 10 digs for a double-double, while Annie Reilly finished with 30 digs. Shelby Winkelmann finished with 15 digs as well.

With the win, the Jennies are now a half game behind Nebraska-Kearney for first place in the MIAA standings. The Jennies close out their road trip on Sunday afternoon at Fort Hays State at 3 p.m.
