AMES, Iowa - Three Mules and two Jennies recorded provisional marks Saturday, in the final day of competition at the Iowa State Classic.
Senior distance runner
Laban Sialo improved upon his time this season in the 5,000m, winning the seeded race in 14:19.93. Dating back to the 2011 indoor season, Sialo has won four straight indoor 5,000 meter races, and currently ranks seventh in the nation. Among the MIAA, Sialo's time is the fastest to date this season.
In his first long jump competition as a Mule, freshman
Meelis Siimson finished fourth in the seeded high jump, using his second attempt to record his best mark of 23' 8.75". Siimson now ranks 11th nationally in the long jump, earning a provisional bid with his performance Saturday. He also ranks second in the MIAA.
In the high jump, junior
Devin Claypool finished fifth in the seeded high jump, clearing the bar at 6' 10.25". His performance earned a provisional mark but came up half an inch short of his season-high of 6' 10.75". Claypool currently ranks ninth in the nation, and second in the MIAA.
For the Jennies,
Zoe Sharplin earned a trip to the 60m hurdles finals after her 8.70 performance in the preliminaries on Friday. The junior ran an identical 8.70 time in the finals, finishing sixth. Sharplin mvoes up to third in the MIAA, and ranks 14th in Division II.
Freshman
Brittany Kallenberger finished eighth in the seeded pole vault, but set a new personal best and improved upon her provisional mark, clearing a height of 12' 2". Kallenberger now has the top mark in the MIAA, and ranks 12th nationally.
Madison Smith, taking a break from multi-event duty to compete in the high jump, placed 10th with a mark of 5' 4.5".
The Mules and Jennies return home next week, to compete in the UCM Classic. The one-day meet takes place in the Multipurpose Building on Friday, February 15th, starting at 11 a.m.
