PUEBLO, Colo. - A pair of freshmen Mules added their names to the All-America list on the final day of competition, as the Central Missouri track & field squads wrapped up day three of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Kellin Loch earned his first career All-American nod in the 800 meter run, while
Chris Swearingin did the same in the men's javelin throw.
Loch, who also earned a trip to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships last March, returned to the national stage on Friday, with the second-fastest time of the preliminary heats to advance to Saturday's final. The Warrensburg native broke the UCM school record in the 800 meters, posting a time of 1:49.57 in the final heat, placing third. Loch's time beats the 2002 record-setting mark from Leif Kennedy, and is just the second Mule to break the 1:50-mark in the 800 meters in program history.
Joining his sister Brooke, who claimed All-American honors on Friday, Swearingin earned an eighth-place result in the javelin, throwing for 209' 4" (63.82m) on his second of six attempts. Swearingin also breaks his own UCM school record, which he set earlier this season. Senior
Carl McCargo also competed in the javelin, placing 14th, with a throw of 198' 8' (60.56m) on his third and final attempt.
For the Jennies, junior
Mary Riley was the lone athlete in action, competing in the women's javelin. The 2012 All-American in the javelin throw, Reily placed 12th on Saturday, with a toss of 138' 8" (42.28m) on her second of three attempts.
The Mules recorded three All-American performances throughout the Championships, including Loch, Swearingin, and senior
Brent Vogel (3rd) in the decathlon. The team totaled 13 points to finish in a tie for 20th place overall in the team standings. The Jennies collected 12 points from a pair of All-American performances by
Zoe Sharplin (3rd) in the heptathlon, and
Brooke Swearingin (3rd) in the discus. The Jens finish the meet in 22nd place overall. St. Augustine's (N.C.) claimed the national team title on the men's side, while Academy of Art (Calif.) won the women's national championship.
