WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Fueled by
Keuna Flax's double-double and
BreAnna Lewis' outside shooting, the 7th-ranked Central Missouri Jennies earned an important home victory over the Lincoln Blue Tigers, 77-62, Saturday afternoon in the Multipurpose Building. The Jennies extend their current winning streak to eight games, and keep their perfect home-court record intact.
Lewis got the offense rolling for UCM (21-2, 13-2 MIAA) early, knocking down the first of her five three-pointers less than a minute into the contest. The Jens used that to kick-start a 12-4 start over the opening four minutes, controlling the lead throughout the game.
The Blue Tigers (9-13, 4-10 MIAA) made it a one-point game only twice, when Alicia Johnson and Freddie Sims each scored on a layup on Lincoln's first two scores of the game. After Sims made it a 5-4 UCM lead, the Jens answered with seven straight points, including a pair of treys from Flax and Lewis.
The Jennies reached their biggest lead of the first half off another Lewis three-pointer, capping off a 10-2 run and making it a 28-14 edge for Central Missouri with 5:38 in the first half. As both sides headed to the locker room for halftime, Flax led all scorers with 13 points, while Lewis collected 12 points of 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, as UCM held a 34-22 lead at the break.
Junior
Symone Murray pushed the lead back to 14 points to start the second half, scoring on the Jennies first possession. The lead stretched to 16 points when
Quinnecia Twine scored four straight, making it a 47-31 game with 13:09 to play. After a Freddie Sims three-pointer for the Blue Tigers on the next possession, Flax and Lewis scored back-to-back layups, stretching the lead again to 17 points with 12:06 to play.
The Jens lead slowly grew throughout the second half, as Lincoln played even with the Jens for the most part, holding a rebounding advantage, 22-18 in the second half and pulling down 11 offensive boards. A jumper from Murray gave UCM their largest lead of the game with 4:29 to play, at 72-51.
Sophomore
Danielle Bounds matched her career high in the game, scoring five points of 2-of-3 shooting while coming off the bench.
The win marks the 13th in conference play the season, matching the highest total for the Jennies in the
Dave Slifer era. Coach Slifer is also now just one win away from matching Scott Ballard's (1995-03) total at UCM of 167, ranking second on the Jennies all-time coaching wins list.
The Jennies hit the road next week, as they travel to Bolivar to take on Southwest Baptist on Saturday, February 13. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., and the game can be found on 98.5 The Bar, 1450 KOKO, and online at www.warrensburgradio.com.
