Jennies split day one of MIAA Tournament

(OVERLAND PARK, Kan.) – Jennies softball (26-29) split the first day of the MIAA Postseason Softball Tournament at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex, winning the opener over Washburn, 5-2 and falling to top seed Emporia State, 8-0, in the nightcap.
            The Jennies started off game one quickly, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jaydee Young to take the 1-0 lead. 
            Washburn answered back though in the top of the fourth, scoring a single run on a solo home run to knot the score up at one heading into the bottom of the inning. The Jennies scored three in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two on an RBI single from Brittany Martin and a run on a triple down the right field line from Katie Groves, giving the Jennies the 4-1 lead.
            The Jens added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a single from Ashlea Bengtson, increasing the lead to 5-1.
            The Lady Blues tallied a single run in the top of the seventh, but the Jennies defense held tough, resulting in the 5-2 victory.
            The Jennies outhit the Lady Blues 10-7 in the game and committed only one miscue.
            Jennies' right hander Sarah Espy pitched a complete game, striking out four, improving her record to 10-8 on the season.
            The Jens fell 8-0 to top-seeded Emporia State in the second game of the tournament, dropping them into the loser's bracket and an elimination game Friday morning at 11 a.m. against Northwest Missouri State.
