(ST. CHARLES, Mo.) – Jennies softball (25-28) split their final doubleheader of the regular season Saturday afternoon at Lindenwood (24-29), dropping game one 4-1 then winning the second game, 6-5.
The Jennies could not get the key hit in the first game of the day, stranding seven runners on-base while the Lions scored a run in the bottom of the second, fourth and two runs in the sixth, giving the Lions the 4-0 lead heading into the final inning.
Karissa Williams gave the Jennies their lone run of the game when she hit a two-out double in the top of the seventh but the Lions ended the Jens rally after that, resulting in the 4-1 loss.
In the nightcap, the Jennies and Lions battled the entire game. The Jennies took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a double by
Jordan Marble but Lindenwood answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own, tying the game at 2-2.
The Jens answered right back in the top of the third, scoring another couple runs on a double by
Ashlea Bengtson, reclaiming the 4-2 lead. Again the Lions answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring another pair of runs to knot the game up, 4-4.
Central Missouri plated a single run in the top of the sixth on a
Karissa Willliams ground out to shortstop, scoring Bengtson, giving the Jennies the 5-4 lead. But, like they had done in the previous two scoring innings, Lindenwood answered with the tying run in the bottom of the inning, knotting the contest at five.
The Jennies retook the lead in the top of the seventh on an error by the Lions, allowing
Jaydee Young to cross the plate for the 6-5 lead. The Jennies defense held in the bottom of the seventh, preventing Lindenwood from scoring, leading the Jennies to the 6-5 win.
Jennies right-hander
Sarah Espy pitched four innings in relief, striking out three and only allowing one earned run to improve to 9-8 overall.
The Jennies finish the 2012 regular season with a 25-28 overall record and will now await word on their opponent and game time in the MIAA Postseason Softball Tournament, beginning Thursday in Overland Park, Kansas. The bracket is slated to be released Sunday evening by the conference office.
