Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – Jennies softball (19-26) dropped a doubleheader to the Maryville University Saints Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis, falling in game one 4-3 and dropping game two, 9-7.
Despite outhitting the Saints by a 9-4 margin in the first game of the afternoon, the Jennies could not get that magic hit, stranding seven runners on base during the game, helping the Saints to the 4-3 victory.
The Jennies fell behind early in the bottom of the first when Maryville plated two runs but fought back in the top of the third to tie the game at two on a Braylyn Bivens (Kansas City, Mo.) single and a Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.) double, which knotted the game up 2-2. The Saints regained a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth but the Jennies fought back in the top of the sixth with a run, scoring on a single by Jordan Marble (Jefferson City, Mo.), closing the gap to 4-3. The Jennies had a golden opportunity to tie or take the lead in the contest in the top of the seventh when Young doubled with two outs and a runner on third but they couldn't drive in the runners, losing the contest on a ground out the very next play.
Game two was more of the same for the Jennies as once again they could not get the clutch hit to drive in runs, stranding 10 runners on base, which helped the Saints to the 9-7 victory and doubleheader sweep. The Jennies stranded at least one runner in every inning except the third in the second game.
The Jennies took the early lead in the game, scoring two runs in the top of the first on a home run by Jaydee Young, her team-high sixth this season, to take the 2-0 lead. That lead didn't last long though. The Saints scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to claim the 4-2 lead. The Jennies got a single run in the top of the second on an error by Maryville to pull within one run of the lead, 4-3 but the Saints again responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to increase their lead to 6-3. Maryville added a couple of runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-3 lead over Central Missouri. The Jennies answered though, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a Karissa Williams (Wichita, Kan.) single and a Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.) double, cutting into the Saints lead and brining the Jens within two, 8-6. Once again the Saints answered though in the bottom of the inning, plating a single run to make it 9-6. The Jennies got a run in the top of the sixth on a single by Alex Groeger (Fort Collins, Colo.) but could not close the gap, resulting in the 9-7 loss to Maryville.
The Jennies look to bounce back Saturday when they host an MIAA doubleheader against Pittsburg State at the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg. Game one is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
