Jennies softball splits with Lady Miners

(ROLLA, Mo.) – University of Central Missouri Jennies softball (9-7) split two games against the Lady Miners of Missouri S&T Wednesday afternoon in Rolla, falling in the first game 4-3, before bouncing back and winning the final game, 6-1.
Game 1: Missouri S&T 4, Central Missouri 3
            The Jennies saw a three-run lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one and fell to Missouri S&T, 4-3.
            Central Missouri started off quickly in the top of the first when Medora West (St. Louis, Mo.) tripled to centerfield followed by a single by Braylyn Bivens (Kansas City, Mo.), scoring West and putting the Jennies in front 1-0. Missouri S&T responded in the bottom of the inning though when Rachel Glenn singled down the leftfield line, scoring one run and knotting the game up, 1-1.
            The Jennies had an answer in the top of the second though when Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.) scored on an error by the Lady Miners, allowing the Jennies to retake the lead at 2-1. 
            The game remained 2-1 in favor of Central Missouri until the top of the seventh when Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.) singled through the right side of the field, scoring Bivens which increased the Jennies' lead to 3-1 heading into the final half-inning of the contest. Missouri S&T didn't panic being down two-runs in the bottom of the seventh and proceeded to score three runs to take the 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Jennies.
            With the loss, the Jennies see their season record dip to 8-7 overall.
 
 
Game 2: Central Missouri 6, Missouri S&T 1
            After dropping the first game of the doubleheader in Rolla, the Jennies responded with a 6-1 victory over the Lady Miners in the second and final game.
            Central Missouri once again started off quickly in the top of the first when Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.) doubled to leftfield, scoring Katie Groves (Bluffdale, Utah) and Medora West (St. Louis, Mo.) and giving the Jennies the early 2-0 advantage. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, Nicole Norberg (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the Jennies third run of the inning on a Lady Miner throwing error, increasing the Jennie lead to 3-0.
            The Jennies added another run in the top of the second on a Karissa Williams (Wichita, Kan.) ground ball that scored Ashlea Bengtson (Wichita, Kan.) who led off the inning with a double to right centerfield.
            Missouri S&T added a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning but Central Missouri responded in the top of the fifth with a run when Bengtson hit a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield which allowed Groves to cross home plate and increase the UCM lead to 5-1.
            The Jennies got one more run in the top of the sixth on a throwing error by the Lady Miners which scored West and gave Central Missouri the 6-1 victory.
            Jennies' pitcher Sarah Espy (Olathe, Kan.) picked up her third win of the season, pitching a complete game with five strikeouts while allowing only one run.
            The Jennies are now 9-7 overall with the win.
            Central Missouri is back in action Friday, hosting Emporia State in the MIAA conference and home opener at the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m.
