(JOPLIN, Mo.) – University of Central Missouri Jennies' softball (8-6) split games on the final day of the 2012 Mathis Zenner Memorial Tournament in Joplin, falling in the first game 4-1 against St. Edward's before winning, 3-2, against Upper Iowa.
Game 1: St. Edward's (Texas) 4, Central Missouri 1
The Jennies offensive struggles continued in the first game of the day at the tournament, falling 4-1 against the Hilltopper's.
Central Missouri could only manage one run in the top of the fourth inning on a single to left field by
Karissa Williams (Wichita, Kan.) which scored
Nicole Norberg (St. Louis, Mo.).
The rest of the contest was all St. Edward's though, as they scored runs in the first (1), second (1) and fourth (2) innings, taking the 4-1 victory and handing the Jennies their fourth straight setback.
Game 2: Central Missouri 3, Upper Iowa 2
Central Missouri snapped its four-game losing streak in the final game of the Mathis Zenner Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Upper Iowa.
The Jennies got on the board in the top of the first when
Brittany Martin (Warrensburg, Mo.) singled to right field, scoring
Katie Groves (Bluffdale, Utah) and giving UCM the early 1-0 lead. Upper Iowa answered in the bottom half of the inning though, scoring the tying run on a single.
Central Missouri responded and retook the lead for good in the top of the sixth when
Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.) belted a single up the right side of the field, driving in Martin, who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Jennies added another run in the top of the seventh on a fielding error by the Peacocks, making it 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Upper Iowa added another in the bottom of the inning but couldn't retake the lead or tie the game, giving Central Missouri the 3-2 victory.
The Jennies got five solid innings of pitching from
Sarah Espy (Olathe, Kan.) with
Katie Shockley (Crocker, Mo.) claiming the save.
With the win, Central Missouri improves to 8-6 overall heading into a doubleheader Wednesday at Missouri S & T in Rolla, Missouri. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. for the first game.
