WARRENSBURG, Mo. - In just her third collegiate game, freshman guard
Shelby Winkelmann posted her first career double-double, scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds, as the Central Missouri Jennies defeated the Harding Lady Bison, 78-62, Thursday night at the Multipurpose Building. Winkelmann shot 60% (9-of-15) from the field, as the Jennies earned an important in-region victory and advanced to 3-0 on the year.
Winkelmann got started early, scoring the first bucket of the game with a driving layup just ten seconds into the game. The Jennies took a five point lead after five minutes, when
BreAnna Lewis hit a jumper to make it a 12-7 score. The Lady Bison answered with three straight treys, including back-to-back scores from Kristen Celsor to take the lead. A layup on the Lady Bison's next possession made it an 18-12 Harding advantage, forcing head coach
Dave Slifer to call a timeout.
Junior
Symone Murray pulled the Jens back in the game with back-to-back treys of her own, tying the score at 18-18 with 10:58 to play. When
Danielle Barry scored off a Lewis assist at the 9:41 mark of the first half, UCM took a 22-21 lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the night. The Jennies finished the first half on an 11-2 run, highlighted by two more three-pointers from Murray. The Brampton, Ontario native led all scorers at the half with 12 points.
Harding (1-1) cut the lead after the break, down to just five points after a three-pointer from Tabitha Haney at the 16:57 mark, capping off a 12-4 Lady Bison run to start the half. Over the next two minutes, Winkelmann took over, scoring eight straight points on three straight possessions, rebuidling the Jennies lead back to 13 points, at 56-43. The rest of the team got involved over the next two minutes, and in all, UCM took a 16-0 run over less than three minutes, putting the game nearly out of reach.
Up by 21 points with 13:09 to play, Harding would be unable to cut the lead to single digits the rest of the night. Winkelmann scored 17 of her 24 in the second half, as well as nine of her 12 rebounds. She also dealt out three assists without a turnover after the half.
Lewis finished her third consecutive game scoring in double figures, as the junior guard posted 15 points in the win. She also collected a game-high five assists. Murray's 12 points, all scored in the first half, gives her three straight games with ten or more points as well.
Brielle Wattley, coming off the bench at the point guard spot, tallied five assists without a turnover while seeing 23 minutes of floor time against the Lady Bison. The bench performed well overall for the Jennies, scoring 20 points compared to just four points from the Harding reserves. UCM also outscored their third straight opponent in the paint, 30-26.
The Jennies will cap off their homestand this Sunday, when they welcome the St. Mary's (Texas) Rattlers to the Multi. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
