Jennies Continue Win Streak, Sweep Bearcats

(Bolivar, Mo.) – Jennies softball out hit the Bearcats 20-10 on the day in an 11-0 (five inn) and 6-3 (eight inn) sweep over Southwest Baptist on Saturday at the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar, Mo.
      Central Missouri (9-7, 2-0 MIAA) won its ninth straight game and swept the opening weekend of conference action. With the pair of wins, UCM also kept head coach Susan Anderson unbeatable in Bolivar with a 6-0 mark. The team is also now 1-1 in extra inning affairs this season.
      Senior Kasey Martin, junior Katie Groves, sophomore Ashlea Bengtson and freshmen Braylyn Bivens and Brittany Rozier all had three hits apiece. Martin had three RBI, and Groves recorded a home run, two runs scored, three RBI, three walks, and two stolen bases. Bengtson scored twice, hit one double and stole a base in the games. Bivens scored three times with a double, four RBI and three stolen bases while Rozier scored once.
      In the circle, both senior Jamin Landreth and sophomore Sarah Espy collected a win. The duo combined for 12 strikeouts in 13 innings.
      The Jennies will be back on the road with a non-conference doubleheader against Rockhurst on Wednesday in Kansas City. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
 
Game 1: Jennies 11, Bearcats 0
      Central Missouri out hit SBU 12-3 in the game, as it was cut short due to a run rule. The Jennies scored at least one run in all five innings and only allowed three Bearcat runners on third base.
      After a leadoff single in the first inning by Bivens, Groves smashed her third home run of the season that gave UCM a 2-0 lead. Later, junior Brittany Martin hit her first round tripper as a Jenny.
      With runners on second and third and two outs in the second frame, Kasey Martin singled to score both. Central Missouri scored on more in the third on a sacrifice fly to right field that made the score 6-0.
      In the fourth inning, with two runners on and one out, senior Kelli Kurka connected on her third homer of the season. She now has a program-high 28 home runs in her career.
      With runners on second and third, Bivens hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate a runner. Groves then singled to left field for her third RBI of the game.
      Landreth pitched the whole game, only giving up three hits. She struck out five batters, one shy of a personal game-high, and walked three.
 
Game 2: Jennies 6, Bearcats 3
      The first three innings where quite for both sides as neither were able to plate a runner and combined for three hits. Central Missouri scored first, in the fourth, with a pair. SBU put one up in the bottom half only to give up one in the fifth. The Bearcats then tied it in the sixth that forced extras.
      After a leadoff walk in the fourth, junior Nicole Norberg hit her second home run of the season. Then in the fifth, with two on and one out UCM hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored another.
      In the eighth inning, with two outs, Central Missouri loaded the bases for Bivens to clear them with a double to left center.
      All three runs by Southwest Baptist came off a home run, one a two-run shot.
      Espy threw the whole eight innings, giving up the three runs on seven hits. She struck out seven batters, one shy of tying a personal game-high, and walked four.
