MANKATO, Minn. – In a top-15 showdown, the third-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks defeated the No. 13-ranked University of Central Missouri Jennies Soccer team, 1-0, at The Pitch on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 7.
The Jennies (0-1-1) will look to bounce back when they face No. 16-ranked Ashland (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. CT (5 p.m. ET) in Allendale, Mich., at GVSU Soccer Field.
Both UCM and Minnesota State battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the opening 45 minutes of the match, but the Mavericks were awarded a penalty-kick after a UCM foul in the goal box in the 76th minute, and Minnesota State's Anna Van Wyngarden converted the kick, putting the Mavericks in front, 1-0.
Central Missouri's
Hazel Douglas-Trotman (80th minute) and
Izzy Joyce (87th minute) tried to knot the match, but both of their shots were stopped by Maverick goalkeeper Lauren McAlpine to help MSU secure the win.
Joyce, Trotman-Douglas, and
Patsy O'Brien all had one shot on goal to lead UCM offensively for the match.
The Jennies outshot the Mavericks (1-0-1), 8-7, including a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal, and bested MSU in corner kicks, 3-0.
Central Missouri goalkeeper
Kristen Wright (0-1-1) suffered the loss between the posts, surrendering one goal while making one save in 90 minutes.
McAlpine (1-0-1) earned the victory in goal for the Mavericks after making three saves and giving up no goals in 90 minutes.
Van Wyngarden and Kiera Laney both had one shot on goal, leading MSU offensively.
