EMPORIA, Kan. – The Central Missouri Jennies (22-14, 9-7 MIAA) swept a pair of games against the Emporia State Hornets (25-17, 6-10 MIAA) winning 7-2 (9 inn.) and 6-2 Monday, April 7, from Turnbull Field in Emporia, Kan.
The Jens continue MIAA play on Friday, April 11, as they take on the Missouri Southern Lions (28-11, 8-3 MIAA) for a doubleheader with game one beginning at 3:00 p.m. from Jennies Field at the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg.
Game 1: Central Missouri 7, Emporia State 2 (9 inn.)
Trailing by one run in the top of the sixth, Central Missouri's
Taylor Thompson gave the Jens a 2-1 lead with an RBI double down the third base line that scored
Brooke Weimer and
Lexi Blackmon before the Hornets evened the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
After a scoreless eighth inning,
Morgan Shields led off the ninth with a solo shot to right field before Weimer doubled the UCM advantage with an RBI single. Blackmon plated the third run of the inning with an RBI bunt single before
Bailey Brumley's two-RBI single made it 7-2 Jens en route to their 21
st win of the season.
Weimer improved to 8-6 on the year with her team-leading 13
th complete game performance allowing just three hits while striking out 11 Hornet batters. Five Central Missouri batters recorded multi-hit outings including three hits from Blackmon (two runs scored) and Brumley in the winning effort.
Game 2: Central Missouri 6, Emporia State 2
UCM opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with three runs beginning with a Shields RBI single (scoring
Carly Youngblood) followed by a
Marisa Johnson two-run shot. With two on and two out in the fifth, Johnson delivered again with an RBI single that scored
Jadyn Sheffield before the Hornets responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning making it 4-1 UCM.
The Jens plated a pair of runs in the sixth thanks to a two-RBI triple off the bat of Brumley as
Emily Brouse (7-3) earned the victory in the circle allowing just four hits while striking out four Hornet batters. The Jens were paced offensively by Sheffield (two runs scored), Thompson, and Johnson (one run scored) who collected three hits each in the doubleheader finale.
