TOPEKA, Kan. – The Central Missouri Jennies (6-2, 0-0 MIAA) won a pair of games in the opening day of the Washburn Invitational defeating the Northern State Wolves (5-1, 0-0 NSIC) by a final score of 4-0 before taking down the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles (5-7, 0-0 NSIC) by a final score of 8-0 (5 inn.) on Sunday, Feb. 23, from Silver Lake High School.
The Jens return to the diamond on Monday, Feb. 24, as they take on the Minnesota State Mavericks (3-3, 0-0 NSIC) at 1:30 p.m. followed by a contest with the Wayne State Wildcats (Neb., 5-1, 0-0 NSIC) at 3:30 p.m. in the final day of the Washburn Invitational from Silver Lake High School.
Game 1: Central Missouri 4, Northern State 0
The Jens opened the scoring in the first inning of play using small ball to cash in a run thanks to aggressive baserunning from
Lexi Blackmon who scored from second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of
Jadyn Sheffield.
Central Missouri doubled the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from
Morgan Shields that scored
Taylor Thompson before getting insurance runs with a two-run digger from
Bailey Brumley making it a 4-0 game.
Sophomore
Brooke Weimer (1-2) allowed just one hit while striking out a career-high 11 batters in the circle while six Jennies batter collected a hit in the contest highlighted by Brumley's three-hit outing.
Game 2: Central Missouri 8, Minnesota-Crookston 0 (5 inn.)
After leading 1-0 heading into the fourth inning, Central Missouri plated five runs in the frame beginning with a Shields 2-RBI double, followed by RBI singles from Sheffield (scoring
Carly Youngblood),
Aly Hageman, and Thompson making it a six-run Jennies advantage.
In the next offensive frame for UCM, sophomore
Teelie Super's pinch-hit 2-RBI double delivered the game-clinching runs as
Emily Brouse (2-0) earned her second win of the season in the circle allowing just two-hits while striking out eight Golden Eagle batters en route to their sixth win of the year.
