PITTSBURG, Kan. – The opening day of action at the 10th Annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic is in the books for UCM Track & Field. The Mules & Jennies kicked-off the two-day meet with several notable performances Friday, Feb. 14, inside the Robert W. Plaster Center on the Pittsburg State University campus.
Jumps
- The Jennies had three top 10 finishers in the women's pole vault open division. Haley Sexton placed fourth after tying her personal-best mark of 3.45m (11-3.75) on her first attempt while Sydnie Bernard finished in fifth after clearing 3.45m (11-3.75) on her second attempt and Makenna Payne was eighth, clearing 3.30m (10-10.00).
- Justin Hamrick was runner-up in the men's high jump open division after clearing a mark of 1.96m (6-5.25).
- Loch Louis placed sixth in the men's long jump with a personal-best mark of 7.13m (23-4.75).
- In the women's high jump open division, the Jennies had two in the top 10. Marah Klover tied for seventh after clearing 1.55m (5-1.00) on her second attempt while Cate Cooper was 10th with a personal-best mark of 1.55m (5-1.00) on her third attempt.
- Marissa Austene placed ninth in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.59m (18-4.00).
Sprints/Hurdles
- Rawley Chard ran a provisional time of 21.51 to win the men's 200m dash open division.
- Parker Wormek qualified for the men's 60m hurdles final, which will be ran Saturday, after finishing fourth in the prelims with a provisional time of 7.86.
- Isaak Rasche finished second in the men's 600-yard run with a personal-best time of 1:11.76. His time ranks eighth-best in school history.
- Emily Meeks ran a personal-best 25.17 to place sixth in the women's 200m dash open division. Her time ranks sixth-fastest in indoor school history.
Throws
- Rachael Molloy was runner-up in the women's weight throw after launching a provisional throw of 18.45m (60-6.00). Kaitlin Peek was sixth with a provisional and personal-best throw of 17.15m (56-3.00). Her mark ranks sixth-best in school history.
Distance
- Cooper Palmer ran a personal-best 14:35.02 to win the men's 5,000m run. His time ranks fifth-fastest in school history. Cosmas Kiprop also finished in the top-five for the Mules, placing fifth with a personal-best time of 14:41.58.
Day two of the Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic is slated for Saturday, Feb. 15, in Pittsburg.
