KENOSHA, Wis. --Â University of Central Missouri Mules Wrestling had another successful tournament on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Jim Koch Open, advancing 11 wrestlers into placement matches, including redshirt senior
Gage Bernall, who won the championship in the 165-pound bracket.
At 125 pounds,
Peyton Shepard finished fourth after going 4-2 on the day, picking up two wins via tech fall, one major decision, and one decision before falling to Iowa's Joey Cruz via a 13-2 major decision in the third-place match.
Brock Smith was fifth, compiling a record of 3-2. He won his first two matches via decision before dropping his semifinal match to Purdue's Jacob Macatangay, dropping into the consolation bracket, before taking fifth place.Â
At 133,
Drew Stanfield turned in one of the day's most complete performances with a 16-0 tech fall over Grand Valley State's Preston LeFevre, before dropping his quarterfinal contest. Stanfield went a perfect 4-0 in the consolation rounds and captured third place with an 8-0 major decision against Grand Valley State's Preston LeFevre.Â
Trey Dillow posted a fifth-place performance at 149 points after going 4-2 on the day. He defeated UW-Parkside's Edwyn Schroeder in the fifth-place match with a 7-2 decision.Â
At 157 pounds,
Jack Ferguson finished fifth, posting a 13-4 major decision over GVSU's Brody Jones. He also picked up wins against Tate Condexo and Jacob Taplin of Southwest Minnesota State, and took down Jones again with a 13-4 major decision in the fifth-place match.
Ayden Dolt went 3-1 on the day, finishing in third place, highlighted by a fall against Wisconsin's Lane Robinson and an 18-0 tech fall over Brody Jones.
Bernall controlled the 165-pound bracket from start to finish, earning an 8-0 major decision over UW-Parkside's Nolan Skebba and producing technical falls over Caden Jacobs (Grand Valley State) and unattached Jacob Durocher. He later defeated UW-Parkside's Brody Hemauer again in the finals to secure the 165-pound title.
Dax Gentes went 3-3 on the day, placing sixth, and earned two of his wins via bonus points (fall and major decision).
Conner Johnston also reached a milestone at 165, collecting the 50th win of his collegiate career with a 14–7 decision over unattached Durocher.
At 174 pounds,
Anthony Erickson went 2-1, finishing runner-up to UW-Parkside's Dajun Johnson. Freshman
Grant Van Horn opened his tournament with a pair of victories, including a fall over Harper College's Peter Greco, before dropping contests to Trammel Robinson and Dajun Johnson, placing fifth.Â
Damon Ashworth, who is ranked No.2 in the latest NWCA Division II Individual Rankings, extended UCM's presence in the finals at 184 pounds by hitting career win No. 60 with a fall over Maryville's Caden Gousettis and a 13–2 major decision over Grand Valley's Bradley Mayse before finishing as the runner-up to Iowa's Gabe Arnold.
At heavyweight,
Torin Forsyth reached the finals after an 8-5 decision over UW-Parkside's Cooper Caraway and a first-period fall over unattached Connor Diemel. Forsyth later finished second after losing to Northern Illinois' Sean Carroll in the championship match, 7-3.
The Mules return to action at the Jack Hancock Duals in Golden, Colo., on Dec. 20.
