Late Goal Pushes Washburn Past No. 12 Jennies Soccer Friday

TOPEKA, Kan. – A goal in the 85th minute proved to be the difference as Washburn edged the No. 12-ranked University of Central Missouri Jennies Soccer, 1-0, Friday evening, Oct. 24, at Yager Stadium.

With the setback, UCM moves to 8-3-4 overall and 5-1-3 in MIAA play, while the Ichabods improve to 9-2-3 overall and 6-0-2 in league action.

After a scoreless first half that saw each side post two shots, Washburn broke through late in the second frame. In the 85th minute, the Ichabods' Mackinly Rohn netted the game's lone goal, an unassisted strike that gave Washburn a 1-0 lead.

The Jennies pressed for the equalizer in the closing minutes, with looks from Aspen Patterson and Mikayla Ernst, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Ernst paced Central Missouri offensively with a match-high three shots, while Patterson and Patsy O'Brien tallied two apiece. Jennies goalkeeper Kristen Wright (8-3-4) took the loss in net, turning aside six shots in 90 minutes of action.

For the contest, Washburn outshot UCM, 10-7, including a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal, and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Jennies will look to rebound quickly as they travel to Emporia State on Sunday, Oct. 26, for a 1 p.m. match at the ESU Soccer Pitch.
