No. 24 Jennies Volleyball Takes Down Gorillas in Four

PITTSBURG, Kan. – No. 24 Central Missouri Jennies (13-3, 5-1 MIAA) defeated the Pittsburg State Gorillas (8-8, 2-4 MIAA) by a final score of 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23) Friday, Oct. 10, inside John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan.

The Jens won the first set 25-19, thanks to an 8-2 run highlighted by five kills on seven swings (.714 hitting percentage) from opposite Lauren Blake, giving UCM a 1-0 lead. Blake, a native of Indianola, Iowa, ended the match with a career and team-high 15 kills on 28 attempts (career-best .500 attack percentage), adding three blocks and two digs for good measure.

Central Missouri led 11-10 in the second and began a 5-2 run with a kill from senior Rachel Ziesman (eight kills, five blocks, and two digs overall), and was capped off by a Kayla Baer kill. Baer, the reigning MIAA Setter of the Week, had a match-high 48 assists, eight digs, six kills, and four blocks in the winning effort.

After dropping the third set and leading 16-15 in the fourth, the Jens began a 6-1 run and never relinquished en route to their sixth consecutive victory, improving to 13-3 on the season, including 5-1 in MIAA play.

Three UCM hitters finished the night with double-digit kills, including Kaelyn McDonald (12 kills and a team-high seven blocks) and junior Shaye Koski (11 kills, three digs, and two blocks), while Emma Siron contributed a career-best 22 digs and nine kills.

Four Jens ended the match with double-figure digs, including a match-high 31 from redshirt senior Grace Winkelmann. The native of Rhineland, Mo., has collected 1,685 in her career and is just nine shy of sixth-most in program history, tying the mark set by Emily Applebaum (1984-87).

Defensive specialist Brenna Kelly had 13 digs, while freshman Ragin Corwin added 10 digs in the winning effort.

No. 24 Central Missouri continues MIAA play Saturday, Oct. 11, as they host the Newman Jets (2-15, 0-6 MIAA), for Mental Health Awareness Night, beginning at 7:00 p.m. from Dr. Peggy Martin Court inside the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center in Warrensburg.
