Construction on Walton Stadium Fence Begins July 29

Fence to Enhance Student-Athlete Safety and Facility Maintenance

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- To enhance safety and maintain the integrity of Walton Stadium on the University of Central Missouri (UCM) campus in Warrensburg, construction of a surrounding fence will begin on Monday, July 29. As a result, the stadium will no longer be available for general public use outside of attendance at sports and other authorized events.

"We understand that members of our local community occasionally use Walton Stadium for exercise, but because of some challenges we have had over the last few years, it has become necessary to protect Kennedy Field, secure unfettered access for team practices and ensure greater safety for our student athletes," said Alex Greenwood, UCM director of university communications. "UCM continues to invite the community to access the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center for exercise activities during business hours year-round."

Greenwood cited several reasons explaining the decision to secure the stadium with a fence. There have been multiple instances where members of the public have obstructed practice and sometimes caused situations where our student athletes feel unsafe. The facility has often been found littered with refuse, including hazardous and unsanitary items and animal waste. Pet excrement on the field and track poses a significant hygiene and equipment maintenance problem.

The decision aligns with standard practices for athletics facilities at other universities, which are typically not open to the public. Warrensburg High School facilities also follow this protocol.
