TOPEKA, Kan. – The Central Missouri Jennies (18-11, 4-4) dropped both games of their doubleheader with No. 21 Washburn Ichabods (27-5, 6-2) by a final score of 2-1 and 2-1 on Saturday, March 25, from Gahnstrom Field in Topeka.
The Jennies return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 28, hosting the Missouri S&T Miners for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. from Jennies Field at the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg.
Game 1: No. 21 Washburn 2, Central Missouri 1
Washburn threatened in the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off triple from Paige Robbins, but Central Missouri's
Paige Petefish worked out of the jam by getting the following batters to groundout, strike out and fly out to end the frame. The Ichabods were able to get on the board in the second with a two-out RBI single from Autymn Schreiner.
With two outs and
Ashlyn Cook on second base in the top of the seventh inning trailing by a run,
MaKenzie Cooper hit a ground ball to the shortstop who made a throwing error to first base allowing the tying run to score.
After a leadoff double from Schreiner, Washburn's Hadley Kerschen was able to seal the victory with a walk-off RBI single to left center field. Petefish (6-2), suffered the loss in the circle allowing eight hits, two runs (two earned) while striking out three on 102 pitches while Cook led UCM offensively going 2-3, scoring the lone run.
Game 2: No. 21 Washburn 2, Central Missouri 1
In the conference doubleheader finale, the Jens got on the board first in the top of the third inning with a two-out RBI single from
Makenzie McAtee that scored
Jadyn Sheffield giving UCM a 1-0 lead. The Ichabods responded taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from Erin Boles.
Trailing by a run in the top of the seventh, the Jens threatened with runners on second and third with one out but were unable to bring them home as Washburn held on for the victory. In the loss,
Kaylee Diggs (4-4) allowed five hits, two runs (both earned) and struck out two Ichabods while McAtee and
Jessica Sader led Central Missouri offensively going 2-3 respectively.
