WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Caroline Cole scored two goals helping No. 6-ranked Central Missouri Jennies soccer post a 3-2 win over the SWOSU Bulldogs in the 2022 season opener Thursday, Aug. 25, at the South Recreation Complex.
The Jennies (1-0) are scheduled to host Oklahoma Baptist at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
After a scoreless first half, both teams combined for five goals in half number two.
SWOSU took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 68th-minute, but UCM answered instantly, leveling the match, 1-1, after Cole pounded an
Ashleigh Martin pass into the back of the net three minutes later.
The Jennies gained their first lead of the match, 2-1, just two minutes later in the 73rd-minute when Cole bent a corner kick into the top left of the net for her second goal of the match.
That advantage was short-lived, however, as the Bulldogs equalized on a free kick less than a minute later.
Central Missouri gained the lead for good in the 75th-minute, though, when
Kate Hermelink blasted a
Julia Kristensen assist home for the 3-2 advantage.
For the match, UCM outshot SWOSU (0-1), 17-11, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Jennies also took seven corner kicks while limiting the Bulldogs to just one the entire match.
Cole, a redshirt sophomore from Columbia, Mo., paced Central Missouri offensively in the contest, tallying two goals on six shots – all on goal.
Sydney Beck (1-0) earned the victory in-goal for the home side, making four saves in 90 minutes between the posts.
Brianna Benitez netted one of SWOSU's two goals on three shots and two shots on goal, pacing the Bulldogs.
SWOSU goalkeeper Ashley Hughes (0-1) took the loss after allowing three goals on six saves.
