No. 18 Jennies Defeat Missouri Southern, 3-2, Sunday

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Eighteenth-ranked University of Central Missouri Jennies soccer scored three goals in the first half and went on to earn a 3-2 victory over the Missouri Southern Lions Sunday, Sept. 24, at Hal Boden Field.

The Jennies (5-1-0) are scheduled for back-to-back road matches next weekend at Missouri Western on Friday, Sept. 24, and Northwest Missouri Sunday, Sept. 26. The matches will mark UCM's first MIAA conference contests of the season.

The Jennies netted goals in the second, 15th and 23rd minutes on their way to victory in Joplin.

Sydney Leslie scored the first two goals for Central Missouri with assists from McKenzie Robinson and Kassie Newsom. Jordan Austin converted a penalty-kick goal for the third UCM goal.

Jennies' goalkeeper Lindsey Johnson improved to 5-1-0 on the season after making four saves in 90 minutes.

The Jennies jumped on the scoreboard early in the match, netting their first goal just over two minutes in when Leslie placed the ball in the high-right back of the goal off of a feed from Robinson near midfield, putting UCM in front, 1-0.

UCM doubled its advantage 13 minutes later when Leslie added her second goal of the contest on a shot to the lower-left side of the goal via a deflected pass from Newsom, building the Central Missouri lead to 2-0.

Missouri Southern trimmed the Jennies' lead to 2-1 with goal in the 15th-minute, but UCM was fouled inside the box less than 10 minutes later, and Austin stepped up to the penalty spot and buried her penalty-kick, building the Central Missouri advantage to 3-1

MSSU wasn't done though and responded with a goal in the 58th-minute, but couldn't get any closer, securing the 3-2 UCM win.

After netting two goals in the contest, Leslie leads UCM on the season with four goals, while Austin netted the first goal of her collegiate career.

The Jennies outshot the Lions (1-3-2) in the match, 26-16, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
