Jennies Handle the Lions Day One in Edmond

EDMOND, Okla. (May 13, 2021) - Jennies Softball breezed past Missouri Southern with a 7-0 shutout in their first game of the 2021 MIAA Softball Tournament Semifinals. With today's win, the No. 2 seed Jennies will next face the No. 1 seed Bronchos Friday at 11 a.m. 

How it Happened: 
• Central Missouri picked up its eight shutout of the season with a 7-0 victory over Missouri Southern in the MIAA Tournament. 
Paige Petefish and the Jennies defense held the No. 3 seed Lions to just three hits.
• With two runners on and no outs in the bottom of the first inning, a sacrifice bunt by Ashlyn Cook scattered the Lions defense, scoring two UCM runs off two MSSU errors. 
• Cook was then hit home on a double to left center by Makenzie McAtee, plating three total runs for the Jennies in the opening inning.
• Through two innings and seven at-bats, Petefish had already recorded four MSSU strikeouts and allowed just one runner to reach first base. 
• The Lions recorded their first hit in the top of the third as Sidnie Hurst recorded an infield single. She had only made it to second when UCM recorded the final out of the inning. 
• In the bottom half of the inning, a double to left field by Sydney Wellshear was followed with a single through the right side by McAtee to add another UCM run which increased the Jennies lead to 4-0. 
• Missouri Southern recorded two more hits in the top of the fifth. The Jennies defense held the Lions with two runners in scoring position. 
• Central Missouri scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth off three hits and left one runner on base.
• Cook opened the inning with a solo home run over left field, then with two runners on pinch hitter Aubrey Brown hit a deep single to center field, scoring both pinch-runner Peyton Corrigan and McAtee for the Jennies to take a 7-0 lead. 
Kyleigh Lay came in to relieve Petefish for the final two innings. In the Lions final at-bats, Lay and the Jennies defense recorded six consecutive outs. 
• The Lions used three of their four pitchers against the Jennies. 
• Missouri Southern's defense totaled three errors while the Jennies defense was flawless through 21 outs and five assist. 
• With the MIAA Tournament being played double-elimination, the Lions season lives to see another day. Missouri Southern will take on the No. 4 seed Hillcats tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. 
• Central Missouri is now set to face the No. 14 team in Division II and No. 1 seed in the tournament, Central Oklahoma, at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. 

Leading the Jennies:
• First baseman Makenzie McAtee reached on base in all three of her at-bats. She finished two hits with a walk and recorded a game-high two RBI. 
• Designated played Sydney Wellshear shared a game-high two hits with McAtee. 
• Right fielder Ashlyn Cook scored a game-high two runs. 
• Against 19 batters Paige Petefish allowed just three hits and one walk. She also recorded a game-high five strikeouts. 
• In Kyleigh Lay's final two innings, she stuck out three of her six batters faced. 

For the Lions:
• Kara Amos was the only Lion to reach on base in both of her at bats. She accounted for one of MSSU's three total hits and was awarded Petefish's lone walk. 
• Sidnie Hurst and Andrianna Young also finished with one hit each. 
• Amos also pitched a team-high 3.1 innings against UCM. Against 15 batters, Amos allowed four hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out one Jennies. 

News & Notes: 
• Today's win was UCM's third win of the 2021 MIAA Tournament.
• With two doubles and a home run against the Lions, the Jennies offense now has 81 doubles and 41 home runs this season. 
Ashlyn Cook now leads the Jennies with eight home runs this season. 
• The Jennies defense held the MIAA leader in stolen bases, Sidnie Hurst, without a stolen base. 
• The win awarded Paige Petefish with her 16th victory of the season. The All-MIAA First Team pitcher is now on an 11 game winning streak. 
• Central Missouri is now 64-40 all-time against MSSU and posts an overall record of 76-59 in the MIAA Tournament. 

Up Next:
Jennies Softball (34-12) will be the home team against Central Oklahoma (35-10) in the second game of the MIAA Tournament Semifinals. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Bronchos Stadium in Edmond, Okla.
