WARRENSBURG, Mo. (March 7, 2021) - Central Missouri Mules Baseball won their fourth straight game, sweeping the Newman Jets in the process with an 11-6 win Sunday afternoon. The sweep is the first for UCM this season in a three-game set.
How it Happened
• Newman actually outhit the Mules 11-10, but ran into some outs on the bases and left eight runners on.
• Neither team was clean defensively with each committing two errors. Of the Mules 11 runs, six were earned while the Jets scored three unearned runs themselves.
• Central Missouri pitchers struck out eight Jet batters while the Mules only struck out twice themselves.
• It was another big first inning for the Mules to get the scoring started. For the second straight game they batted around in the first. UCM put up a five spot in the opening inning scoring runs in five straight at bats. The only run scoring hit came on a
Micah Evans single. The other four came on an error, hit by pitch, fielder's choice and squeeze bunt. The Mules may have added more runs, but Evans was thrown out following
Josh Schumacher's single to end the inning.
• After the Jets got a run in the fourth, UCM answered putting up two on one swing.
Garrett Pennington took the first pitch he saw the other way for a two-run home run and UCM led 7-1.
• The score stayed that way until the sixth when three straight two-out singles plated two runs for the Jets and they closed the gap to 7-4.
• UCM had another answer in the home half of the inning.
Cole Taylor drove in two with a double and
Micah Evans brought in two more with a two-out single to left.
• Newman added two runs in the ninth on a two-out error that allowed runners to score from second and third but
Evan Rathburn closed the game with a strikeout as UCM finished off the sweep of the Jets.
