No. 3 Vikings Sweep the Jennies

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (March 29, 2021) - Central Missouri softball suffered two losses Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader against No. 3 Augustana. 

GAME 1 - Central Missouri 1, No. 3 Augustana 4
How It Happened:
• The third-ranked Vikings were the first to score in game one against the Jennies. Paige Petefish and the UCM defense allowed two runs off one hit and an error in the bottom of the second. Petefish recorded the final out of the inning with the bases loaded. 
• Augustana held the Jennies with no hits and no runners on base through the first three innings. 
• Left fielder Ashlyn Cook recorded the Jennies first hit with two outs in the top of the fourth with a single through the right side. Augustana recorded its third out with Cook still on first base.
• The Vikings increased their lead to 4-0 in the bottom half of the inning with another solo hit and one UCM error. Kyleigh Lay came in to relieve Petefish for the final out of the inning. 
• Central Missouri's lone run came in the top of the fifth with a solo home run by third basemen Jessica Sader.   
• Both the Jennies and the Vikings recorded just one hit in their final at-bats.     
• The Jennies left two runners on in the bottom of the sixth with shortstop Abbey Fischer in scoring position.  
• During UCM's final at-bat, Augustana recorded two ground outs and a pop-up to end the game with the 4-1 victory. 
• Augustana was aggressive on the bases as the Jennies allowed a season-high of six opponent stolen bases.
• Central Missouri tied its season-low three hits in 24 at-bats. The Jennies defense held the No. 3 Vikings to just five hits which is their second-lowest single-game total this season.   

Leading the Jennies:
• Cook, Fischer, and Sadar led UCM with one hit each. 
• Sadar was responsible for the Jennies solo run with her home run to left field in the top of the fifth inning. 
• Petefash faced 21 hitters allowing four hits, four walks, and only one earned run while striking out six. 
• In eight at-bats, Lay allowed just one hit, no walks, and stuck out five Vikings. 

Leading the Vikings:
• Five different Vikings accounted for Augustana's five total hits. 
• Kendall Cornick and Ashley Mickschl led Augustana with one RBI apiece.
• Gracey Brink scored a game-high two runs. 
• Mickschl threw the entire game for the Viking allowing just three hits, one walk, and one run while striking out a game-high seven batters. 

GAME 2 - Central Missouri 1, No. 3 Augustana 6
How It Happened:
• Central Missouri doubled its hits and cut its errors in half in game two against the No. 3 Vikings. 
• In the Jennies first at-bats they left two runners on base as the leadoff Abbey Fischer and the designated played Sydney Wellshear were both walked. 
• Augustana recorded the first hit and run again in game two and took a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the first. Kyleigh Lay and the UCM defense allowed two hits and two runs scored in the Vikings at-bats.
• Fischer recorded UCM's first hit in her second at-bat with a single through the left side. After stealing second, Fischer was then thrown out at home while attempting to score on Bailey Fowler's double hit to right field. Augustana recorded the final out of the inning with three Jennies on base. 
• Augustana added two more runs in the bottom of the third for the Vikings second 4-0 lead of the day.
• A single through the left side by Wellshear scored Fowler from third for the Jennies first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. 
• The Vikings quickly answered UCM's single run with two hits and one run scored in the bottom half of the inning.
• Augustana's defense recorded three consecutive outs in the top of the sixth then added another score in the bottom half to take a 6-1 lead. 
• With two outs in the top of the seventh, a double by Fowler was followed with a single by Ashlyn Cook giving UCM runners on first and third. Fowler and Cook were both hit home on a double down the left field line by Wellshear to make it a three-run game.
• The Jennies rally attempt was ended on a fly out to center field, leaving Wellshear in scoring position. 
• Central Missouri out-hit the No. 3 Vikings 7-6 in game two. Three of the Jennies seven hits were doubles. 
• Augustana continued to be aggressive on the bases finished 4-4 in stolen base attempts. 
• The Jennies left a total of eight runners on base and stuck out a season-high nine times. 

Leading the Jennies: 
• Cook, Fowler, and Wellshear led the Jennies offense with two hits each.
• Wellshear led the Jennies with a 1.000 on-base percentage in four at-bats and drove in the team-high two RBI. 
• Lay threw two innings against the Vikings giving up three hits, four runs and one walk while striking out two batters.
Sadie Parks came into the game in the bottom of the third. In 23 at-bats she allowed three hits, two runs and one walk while leading UCM with three strikeouts. 

Leading the Vikings:
• Right fielder Kendal Cornick went a perfect 3-3 and shared the team-high 2 RBI with catcher Torri Chute. 
• Cornick also led Augustana in stolen bases with two. 
• Amber Elliott threw six innings against UCM. In 22 at-bat shes allowed four hits, four walks, one run scored and stuck out a game-high nine batters. 

News & Notes:
• This was UCM's second loss against a ranked opponent. 
• Augustana recorded 16 strikeouts against the Jennies which is the most strikeouts UCM has recorded in any doubleheader so far this season. 
Ashlyn Cook led the Jennies with three hits on the day while Sydney Wellshear led with three RBI. 
• Central Missouri is now 8-15 in its all-time series against Augustana. 

Up Next:
Jennies softball returns to league competition on Friday, April 2nd with an MIAA doubleheader against Northeastern State. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Jennies Field in Warrensburg, Mo.
