WARRENSBURG, MO (September 28, 2020) - Student-athletes from the University of Central Missouri normally visit each of the Warrensburg elementary schools during the month of October, promoting the importance of reading skills to young students. However due to the current pandemic, the visits won't take place this Fall. The UCM Athletic Literacy program is still committed to providing books and will continue to do so by delivering new books to each of the schools for the 29
th consecutive year!
The new books, selected by the librarians at the elementary schools through Readers World of Warrensburg, will be delivered to each school later this week with the hope that UCM student-athletes will be able to visit the schools this Spring to read with the young students.
Funds to purchase the new books are being provided through the Eleanor G. Hughes and Carol Dyetta Hughes Literacy Program at the University of Central Missouri, with additional funding provided by the following UCM Athletic partners: Bi-Lo Country Mart, Central Bank, Country Kitchen, Culver's, DQ Grill-n-Chill, Equity Bank, F&C Bank, J.W. Franklin Co., Jimmy John's, Pizza Hut, Smarr & Associates – American Family Insurance, Sodexo, Traditions, UCM Store, Warrensburg Collision, Western Missouri Medical Center, and Zaxby's.
The Literacy Team program was initiated in the fall of 1992 by UCM Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics
Jerry Hughes to honor the legacy of Carol Dyetta Hughes and is designed to provide interaction between Mules' and Jennies' student-athletes and local youngsters with the focus on reading skills.
