WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Feb. 23, 2019) - On a day honoring the seniors, Central Missouri Jennies Basketball seniors
Sydney Crockett and
Paige Redmond combined to score 36 points in the Jennies 86-66 win over Missouri Western. The win puts UCM at 20-5 this season and 13-4 in the MIAA.
How it Happened
• Central Missouri could not miss. They shot 56% from the floor, 53% from three and 89% at the free throw line while their defense limited the Griffons to just 43% from the floor and 3-10 from three.
• The Jennies did an excellent job passing the ball with 14 assists on 30 made baskets while the Griffons had just six helpers.
• UCM lost the ball just eight times while forcing 11 MWSU turnovers.
• Missouri Western won the rebounding edge, 35-28 and had 16 offensive boards, but it was UCM who outscored the Griffons 15-12 on second-chance points.
• It was a track meet right from the opening tip with each team getting off to hot starts. Missouri Western led by four, 10-6, but a pair of threes from Redmond sparked an 8-0 run to give the Jens a four-point lead of their own, 14-10.
• A three from Katrina Roenfeldt put MWSU back on top by two, 16-14, with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter. But the Jennies scored nine points in the final two minutes with layups from Redmond and
Megan Skaggs and three by
Morgan VanHyfte. It looked like UCM would take a seven-point lead into the second, but Melia Richardson flew down the court to beat the buzzer with a layup and after 10 minutes it was a 23-18 Jennies lead.
• The second was another high-scoring period as the Jennies were able to extend their lead. UCM was 10-14 in the second getting nine points from Skaggs and eight from Redmond. Skaggs scored five straight to give UCM their largest lead at that point, 41-28, with a layup and an open three. Melia Richardson though stung UCM again, with another buzzer-beating layup and at the break UCM was up 11, 46-35.
• Missouri Western was never able to get the lead back down to single digits and UCM was content to trade baskets. Central Missouri went 5-7 from deep in the third quarter alone with Crockett and VanHyfte each sinking two. Crockett scored nine of her 12 in the third.
• The Griffons got to within 11 in the fourth, but a 10-1 UCM run put the game away. The Jennies scored eight of those 10 at the free throw line, with six coming from Redmond.
• UCM was able to empty the bench in the final minutes and take a 20-point win for win number 20, 86-66.
