ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Sept. 14, 2018) - It wasn't quite the same as two weeks ago when the Jennies defeated Missouri Western 3-2, but UCM pulled off the same feat, this time in St. Joseph. The Jens trailed 2-0 back on Sept. 1 in Colorado, this time it was 2-1, but the result was the same - a 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 9-25, 25-17, 15-13) win for the now 10-2 (1-0 MIAA) Jennies.
How it Happened
• The match was tight throughout with the Jennies hitting .172 and the Griffons .176. Not much separated the team's in the statistics. MWSU won in kills, 58-50 and digs, 71-68. They scored one more point, 65-64.
• The Jens were able to score five more points on blocks, 10-5 and committed seven less attack errors, 29-22.Â
• Set one saw the Jens take an early 7-2 lead, only for the Griffons to come right back and tie. Missouri Western took their first lead at 10-9 and never trailed again. UCM kept it close, getting to within two on a handful of occasions, but it wasn't enough and the Griffons took a 1-0 lead.
• The Jens took another lead in set two, but this time didn't give it up. Thanks in part to a 4-0 run that brought the score from 13-10 to 17-10, the Jennies were able to tie the match at one game apiece. The Jens benefited from three MWSU attack errors during the stretch.
Audrey Fisher ended the set with a kill.
• UCM never really got going in set three, scoring just nine points. Missouri Western scored the first point and never trailed as they cruised to a 25-9 set three win.
• Missouri Western took another early lead in set four, going up 9-6 and forcing a UCM timeout after a kill from Ali Tauchen. After the break, the Jens scored four straight and took their first lead since the opening point, 10-9.
Hannah Engelken had two kills during the spurt. Central Missouri pushed their lead and three straight kills from Fisher gave UCM a 19-12 advantage which they maintained to a 25-17 win, tying the set at 2-2.
• The decisive fifth set saw four ties and again MWSU taking a lead from the beginning, forcing a UCM timeout with the Jens down 5-2. UCM still trailed by three, 12-9, but never let the Griffons pull away. After another timeout, the Jennies scored three straight to tie with two MWSU errors and a
Carly Offerdahl service ace. Down 13-12, UCM scored the final three to win with kills from Fisher and
Rylee Neigenfind and a game-ending block by Neigenfind and Engelken.
