Jennies Sweep Griffons to Remain Undefeated at Home

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (March 30, 2018) – Central Missouri Jennies Softball kept their undefeated home record intact Friday afternoon with a sweep over the Missouri Western Griffons.  UCM won 4-1 and 4-2 to improve to 21-15 overall and 10-2 in MIAA play.
 
Game One: Central Missouri 4, Missouri Western 1
Play-by-Play
• The Jennies held the Griffons (16-21, 7-5 MIAA) scoreless for all but one inning. The first run of the game came in the bottom of the second when Payton Summers hit solo home run to center field.
• The UCM lead grew to 2-0 when Courtni Smith singled down the left field line to score Kaityn Markin who go one base with a base hit through the left side.
• The Jens final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth thanks in part two a pair of Griffon errors. Taylor Dames reached base on an error by the shortstop. Smith then made a sacrifice bunt to second but was ruled safe after an interference call.
Hailey Crabtree followed up the two errors up with a double to right field to score Dames on the first pitch. Emily King made it a 4-0 UCM lead with a single to left field on the first pitch as well.
• Back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh help MWSU get two runners on base. Rebekah Mueller led off with a base hit and Gabi Carter followed her up with a deep single to center field to get her to third.
• Markee Brown was thrown out at first on a fielder's choice on the next at bat to score the pinch runner for the Griffons. Alexa Bradly then got two straight outs to end the game.
 
Jennies Stat Leaders
• Summers and Smith both finished 1-2 and had a run scored to go along with a RBI.
• Crabtree and Smith both went 1-3 in the game with a RBI.
• Dames had hit in three at bats and a run scored.
• Markin was 1-2 with a run scored.
• Bradley earned the win in the circle to improve to 5-3. She allowed just one run (earned) and had a strikeout on the day.
 
For the Griffons
• Mueller notched two hits in both her plate appearances.
• Shelbie Atwell had two hits in three at bats.
• Kalyn Damgaard had the only run scored as pinch runner.
• Kenzie Hilzer (9-9) pitched the full six innings for MWSU and suffered the loss. She allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out two batters.
 
Game Two: Central Missouri 4, Missouri Western 2
Play-by-Play
• UCM struck first again, but this time in the first inning. Lauryn Deer led off with a single up the middle. She advanced to third on a Taylor Dames bunt single and walk against Payton Summers, respectively.  Hailey Crabtree then plated her home with a single to center field.
• The Griffons tied the game in the second. Rebekah Mueller was walked to leadoff. After a single and sacrifice bunt got her to third, Tamara Hicks scored her with a sacrifice fly to left field.
• The Jens found themselves behind in the top of the fourth as MWSU grabbed its only lead of the day. Mueller was walked to start the inning and then replaced by pinch runner Kalyn Damgaard. Following a single by Gabi Carter to advance Damgaard, Markee Brown scored her on a sacrifice bunt.
• The 2-1 lead for the Griffons did now last long as the Jens added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead. Kaitlyn Markin led off with a double to right center. Deer then nailed a two-run homer to left center and the Jens were back on top 3-2.
Allie Dishinger gave the Jens some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to center field to make it a 4-2 lead. The Griffons never responded and had just two hits in the final four innings.
 
Jennies Stat Leaders
• Deer had a solid game with three hits in four at bats. She scored two runs and had two RBI.
• Dishinger put up one hit in three plate appearances, with a run scored and a RBI.
• Markin finished 2-3 and scored a run.
Katie Giacone pitched the final four innings for the Jens to get the win and improve to 8-5. She allowed just one hit and had a strikeout.
 
For the Griffons
• Carter had the most hits with two in three at bats.
• Brown and Hicks both had a RBI.
• Lonnie Groves and Shelbie Atwell both went 1-4.
• Kalli Hinds was dealt the loss in the circle to fall to 5-8. She allowed nine hits and gave up four runs (all earned). She had four strikeouts in the game along with four walks.
 
News and Notes
• With the sweep, the Jennies are now 8-0 at home and are winners of their last five games overall.
• Bradley has now pitched three complete games this year for UCM and is 3-0 in those games.
• The Jennies are now 59-31 all-time against the Griffons and 18-15 against them under Susan Anderson.
• With the three home runs against MWSU, UCM now has hit 10 this season.
 
Up Next
• The Jennies close out the week with a doubleheader against the Northwest Missouri Bearcats tomorrow afternoon (Saturday). The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Jennies Field. Saturday's game will also be Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
