Jennies Softball Sweeps MSSU at Home

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (March 21, 2018) - Central Missouri Jennies Softball picked up their second home sweep of the season as they took down Missouri Southern, 6-0 and 5-4, Wednesday afternoon at Jennies Field. With the wins, the Jens improve to 14-14 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play.

Game One: Central Missouri 6, Missouri Southern 0
Play-by-Play

Alexa Bradley had a solid day in the circle for UCM as she and the Jens allowed just three hits in the game.
• The Jens first run came in the bottom of the second. Alexis Koop hit a RBI single to right center, scoring pinch runner Makayla Schoonover
• Bradley and the UCM defense kept MSSU (12-18, 1-5 MIAA) at bay as they did not give up a hit until the fifth inning. From the first to the fourth inning, Bradley faced 13 batters and allowed just one walk. 
• Run No. 2 for the Jens came in the third. Kaitlyn Markin got on base with a single to left. After stealing second, Taylor Dames plated her home with a base hit to right center. 
• UCM jumped up 3-0 in the fourth. Hailey Crabtree led off with a double to center field. Following a sacrifice bunt from Allie Dishinger to advance Crabtree, Markin hit a single up the middle to score her.
• Two runs in the bottom of the fifth gave the Jens a commanding 5-0 lead. Payton Summers hit a RBI single up the middle to plate home Dames. Aubrey Daniel pinch ran for Summers and crossed home plate thanks to a RBI double to right field from Crabtree.
• A final insurance run was added in the sixth for UCM. Summers got on base with a hit to left field which scored Lauryn Deer.
• The Lions look to end the shutout with back-to-back two out singles in the top of the seventh, but the Jens held composure and ended the game.

Jennies Stat Leaders
• Markin was a perfect 3-3 in the game, with a run scored
• Crabtree went 2-2, with a RBI and a run scored.
• Summers had two hits in four at bats, with two RBI.
• Deer finished 2-4, with a run scored.
• Bradley's complete game improved her record to 2-2. She allowed three hits, struck out five batters, and had just one walk on the day.

For the Lions
• Angel Badalamenti had two of the Lions' hits in three at bats.
• Shelby Friend had the only other hit and was 1-3.
• Abby Atkin suffered the loss to fall to 3-6 on the year. She allowed eight hits and five runs, all earned, in 4.1 innings pitched. She also finished with two strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two: Central Missouri 5, Missouri Southern 4
Play-by-Play

• Game two was the opposite of game one, as the bats came to life and saw the two teams combine for nine runs on 17 hits. The Jens had seven hits, while Lions were just in front of them with 10.
• UCM led 1-0 after one inning. Lauryn Deer led off with a single through the right side. She gave UCM the lead three batters later thanks in part to a RBI ground out from Payton Summers.
• UCM played behind the rest of the way after MSSU scored a pair of runs in the top if the second to go up 2-1. With two outs and a runner at second, Ashley Caldarella hit a RBI double to left field to tie the game. She was then plated home off of back-to-back singles to give the Lions the lead.
• Both teams continued to hit the ball, but missed opportunities to put runs on the board. The Lions added their third run in the top of the fifth to lead 3-1. The Jens loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and threatened to score, but MSSU escaped the jam.
• UCM tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Hailey Crabtree led off with a single to center field. Allie Dishinger hit a double two batters later to get her and Crabtree in scoring position. Kaitlyn Markin scored both with a two RBI single through the right side.
• The Lions reclaimed the lead in the seventh. Erika Lutgen was walked to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt got her to second. Two batters later, Caldarella singled to center field to score her and give the Lions a 4-3 lead.
• Needing a chance to tie and at least extend the game, Taylor Dames hit a leadoff single to right field. A sacrifice bunt from Courtni Smith got her to second. Summers then stepped up to the plate and played the role of hero. With a 3-1 count in the circle, she nailed a two run walk-off homer to left field to give the Jens a 5-4 win.

Jennies Stat Leaders
• Crabtree finished with the most hits going 2-3, with a run scored.
• Summers was 1-4, with three RBI and a run scored.
• Deer and Dames both went 1-3, with a run scored.
• Katie Giacone got the win in the circle to improve to 5-5. She allowed just two runs, both earned, on seven hits and had four strikeouts.

For the Lions
• Caldarella was 2-4, with a RBI and a run scored.
• Emily Harris also went 2-4 and had a run scored.
• Emilee Meyer finished 1-2, with a RBI.
• Tauren Guzman suffered the loss to fall to 6-8. She gave up four runs, all earned, on five hits.

News and Notes
• The Jennies improve to 4-0 at home this season.
• UCM has now won five of its games this season in walk-off fashion.
• The Jennies have now won eight straight games against MSSU and are now 22-6 against them under Susan Anderson.
• With the sweep, the Jennies are back to a .500 record and are on a five-game winning streak.

Up Next
• The Jens have four road games in two days this weekend. They are at Fort Hays State this Friday, March 23, and at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, March 24, for a pair of MIAA doubleheaders. Friday's doubleheader against the Tigers is set for 2 p.m. start.
