TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 8, 2018) - Central Missouri trailed by as many as 13 late in the third quarter and was able to cut it down to two in the fourth, but Washburn was able to hold on to their lead long enough to prevail 62-57.
How It Happened
• The Jennies struggled from the floor shooting just 36% and were just 2-17 from three. Washburn wasn't much better from three, 3-16, but hit 43% overall.
• Washburn held a slight edge rebounding the ball, 36-35 and scored nine second-chance points.
• The Jennies couldn't hang on to the ball, turning it over 21 times, allowing Washburn 16 points off turnovers.
• Washburn used most of their bench and scored 21 from nonstarters, while the Jennies got just three points from their bench.
• It was a slow start for both teams as UCM led just 10-7 after the opening frame. The Jens scored the game's first four points, and led for the entire first quarter.
• Washburn used an 8-0 run and outscored the Jens 22-9 in the second quarter. A free throw on their final possession gave Washburn their largest lead, 29-19 heading into the break.
• The Ichabods added to their lead in the first six minutes of the second half, taking a 13 point lead, 45-32 after a layup from Hunter Bentley. The Jennies came roaring back in the final 3:11 to score eight straight and
Paige Redmond made it a five-point game, 47-42, with a layup at the buzzer.
• Redmond kept it going with a three to start the fourth and UCM trailed by just two, 47-45. That's as close as they got though as Washburn used a 6-1 run to push the lead back to eight, 54-46.
• Down the stretch,
Kim Crown made two free throws and Redmond a layup cutting an eight-point deficit in half with 55 seconds left to play. Two miss free throws gave the Jennies a chance to inch closer, but the Jens couldn't make another basket and Washburn held on.
It Was Over When...
• The Ichabods gave the Jennies chances in the final minute with a turnover and some missed free throws. Down four with less than 30 seconds, the Jennies couldn't hit a big three and Washburn was able to hold off the Jennies.
