SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Nov. 23, 2018) - No. 1 Central Missouri Jennies Basketball suffered their first loss of the 2018-19 season, but it took 50 minutes to do it. In double-overtime, St. Mary's defeated the Jennies 101-97.
How it Happened
• What a game in San Antonio. 198 combined points in a double-overtime game with St. Mary's.
• The Jennies did most of their damage from behind the arc, hitting 17 three-pointers and shooting 47.2% from three. Though they didn't hit as many, the Rattlers also shot 47% from beyond the arc, hitting 11-of-23.
• Overall, UCM shot 45.6% from the floor while the Rattlers were 45.8%. The Jennies hit 18-of-23 free throws and St. Mary's was 24-31 at the line.
• St. Mary's had a big advantage on the glass, pulling down 46 rebounds to UCM's 37 and had 16 second-chance points to the Jennies five.
• Both teams turned the ball over 22 times, but SMU was able to turn those in 23 points, while the Jennies just 13.Â
• It was a slow start for both teams when a three from
Sydney Crockett broke a seven-all tie with a three midway through the first. In the final minute, the Jennies scored eight unanswered to open up an 11-point lead, 24-13.
Paige Redmond hit a three at the buzzer and scored five in the final 33 seconds.
• UCM led for the entire second period, but the Rattlers were able to cut it down to two, 30-28. A jumper from
Kim Crown and layup from
Morgan Fleming gave UCM a six-point edge, 34-28 at the break.
• Early in the third, UCM matched their largest lead of 11 at 41-30 when Fleming knocked in a three. The Rattlers though ended the quarter on a 14-6 run and trailed by just three entering the fourth.
• The lead changed three times and was tied three more times in the fourth quarter alone. The Rattlers took their largest lead, 63-57 following two free throws after a UCM technical foul. With 1:15 left St. Mary's still led by five when the Jennies came storming back. Redmond hit a jumper and Fleming a three to tie the game at 66. The Jennies had a chance to win on the final shot, but couldn't sink it sending the game to overtime.
• Seven times the lead changed in the first OT and neither team had more than a three-point lead. In the final minute, Fleming put the Jennies up one with a layup and Redmond sank two free throws with 23 second for a three-point lead, 79-76. On their final possession, the Rattlers' Kaitlin Walla was fouled on a three-point attempt and tied the game back at 79 making all three free throws.
• The Jennies scored the first points of OT2 with a layup from Fleming. She then hit a three and UCM led by one, 87-86 with 3:04 left to play. The Rattlers took the lead for good on an offensive rebound and a layup. They held on to it the rest of the way. The Jennies had one final shot down three, 100-97 with the ball and three seconds left, but a turnover on the inbounds insured the Jennies weren't escaping with a win.
It Was Over When...
• The Jennies had a chance to tie down three with three seconds left, but they couldn't get the inbounds pass in and never saw the ball again in the four-point loss.
