WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Oct. 20, 2018) - It may not have started off how they like, but it sure ended with a bang as No. 17 Jennies Volleyball defeated Northwest Missouri 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-16, 27-25). The thrilling match was tense throughout with the Jennies able to come up big when it matted. They move to 20-6 this season and 10-4 in the MIAA.
How it Happened
• The Jennies got retribution for their first meeting in Maryville to start the MIAA season. The Jens outhit NWMSU this time .283-.174.
• UCM's defense also played hard with 13 blocks and 68 digs.
• The Bearcats gained points back with five service aces to the Jennies two. UCM also had two more service errors, 9-7.
• Pick up set one with a tie score, 10-10 before Northwest Missouri rattled off three straight points with two kills and a service ace. They were able to lead the rest of the way and went on top 1-0 with a 25-20 set win. Both teams hit over .300 for the set with just six combined attack errors.
• Set two saw the Jennies jump out to a big lead, 9-3, helped out by three straight Northwest attack errors. The Bearcats didn't go quietly though and 12-6 run tied the set at 15-all. The Bearcats even held a lead as late as 18-17, but the Jens fought hard for a 25-23 win to tie getting a kill from
Kylie Hohlen to clinch the set.
• Set three was the outlier of the match, but despite the Jennies nine-point win, it was the Bearcats who scored the first four points. With three straight kills, the Jennies were able to score the next four to tie and with UCM down 5-4, they scored nine straight and opened up a 13-5 lead. The Jens got six kills during the stretch, including three from
Kylie Hohlen. The Bearcats scored some points late to make it close, but it was 2-1 UCM after a 25-16 set three win.
• Neither team gave an inch in a hard-fought set four that saw 13 ties and four lead changes. On the strength of a 6-1 run, the Bearcats took the largest lead of the set, 14-9, midway through, only to see that quickly disappear into a 16-all tie. The teams went back-and-forth, still tied at 20. UCM grabbed the momentum with three straight points from back-to-back blocks and it was 23-20. Northwest didn't quit and scored four of the next five points to send the set to extra-points with a 24-24 tie. Up by one following another block, it looked like the Jennies had won following a NWMSU attack error, only for a replay review to overturn the call and award the point to the Bearcats, retying the frame, 25-25. Even though the call went against them, it was the Jennies who came out of the long delay motivated and quickly ended the match with a kill from
Hannah Engelken and a Northwest attack error that needed no review.
