LIBERTY, Mo. - Central Missouri Softball split with William Jewell in nonconference action Wednesday afternoon. The Jennies came back in game one to earn an 8-3 win, and lost a nailbiter, 7-6 in game two and stand at 23-23 this season.
Game One: Central Missouri 8, William Jewell 3The Jens fell behind early, as the Cardinals scored three first inning runs off of Jennies starter
Allison Tonyan.
William Jewell starter Shelby McGraw was perfect through the first three innings, but Central Missouri stormed back in the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs.
Ali Jo Rogers got the scoring started with a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the inning.
Emily Robinson and
Lauren Mabe each knocked two-RBI singles and
Katie Giacone and Rogers, in her second at bat of the inning, capped the frame with run-scoring singles.
Robinson came on in relief of Tonyan in the first, and threw 6.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. She allowed just two hits and struck out two while walking four.
The Jennies added a run in the seventh on an RBI single from
Hailey Crabtree.
Rogers picked up three hits in the game with two runs and two RBI. Robinson and Mabe finished with a hit and two RBI each.
McGraw went the full seven innings for the Cardinals. She allowed eight runs, seven earned on eight hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Madi Giles had two of the Cardinals five hits. Phoebe Dabbour was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Game Two: William Jewell 7, Central Missouri 6For the second straight game, the Cardinals jumped ahead of the Jennies early, scoring a run in the first and three in the second. Dabbour and Maddie Greenstreet each hit solo home runs off of Jennies starter
Jordan Johnson.
The Jennies scored in the third, fourth and fifth innings to get back into the game.
Emily King got UCM started with a long three-run home run to right-center field, bringing UCM within one, 4-3, in the third.
Central Missouri tied the game in the fourth on Crabtree's RBI single, but the Cardinals took the lead right back in the bottom of the frame when Aerin Creamer hit a two-run blast to left.
The Jennies again tied the game to start the fifth when
Alex Leonhart launched the fifth home run of the game over the right field fence.
Still tied at six entering the bottom of the seventh, William Jewell loaded the bases with no outs against Robinson, again pitching in relief. Robinson was able to get a double-play off the bat of Morgan Olson, helped out by
Katie Giacone's strike from right field to the catcher to nail Giles trying to tag up. The very next pitch though, Dabbour singled down the left line and Greenstreet trotted home with the tying run.
Robinson took the loss in relief, tossing 2.2 innings giving up one run on four hits with one walk. Johnson threw the first four innings and surrendered six runs on seven hits with two walks.
The Jennies totaled nine hits in the game, getting two apiece from Leonhart, Johnson and
Jill Lucas. King finished 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.
McGraw earned the win for WJC pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with a walk and a strikeout. Anna Biondo got the start for the Cardinals and threw 5.2 innings giving up six runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Five Jewell hitters collected two hits. Dabbour, Giles and Creamer each drove in two and McGraw, Creamer and Greenstreet scored two runs each.
The Jennies are off until next week when the host SBU in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday, April 19. The game will be the Jennies final home game of the 2016 season and will also be their Gold Game in support of Rhyan Loos and pediatric cancer. T-shirt's will be sold both online and at the field with proceeds going to the Loos family.
