Jennies Fall 76-73 in Overtime on Senior Day

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - On a night the Jennies honored their five senior student-athletes, Central Missouri dropped a heartbreaker in overtime, 76-73 to Missouri Southern.

It is the Jennies third straight loss and puts them at 9-15 this season and 8-12 in the MIAA.

Shelby Winkelmann led the Jennies in scoring, tying her season-high with 29 points. Ashley Jones (17) and Paige Redmond (11) also were in double-figures. Ashley Duffy pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds and grabbed six steals.

The Jennies scored the first four points of the afternoon, on a pair of layups from Jones. That was their largest lead of the game. Missouri Southern came storming back in the first and took a 24-15 lead after 10 minutes.

Missouri Southern pushed their lead to 11 on three different occasions, and as late as 4:19 in the second quarter. The Lions didn't score for the rest half though, allowing the Jens to get back into the game.

Danielle Randle scored four points in the closing minutes of the half, and Winkelmann put in a layup with one second remaining and the Jennies trailed by four, 36-32 at the break.

UCM regained the lead in the second half on a pair of free throws from Redmond at the 8:39 mark of the third. The game remained a two-point contest for the rest of the third quarter and the first 3:44 of the fourth.

Redmond then put UCM up by four, 53-49 with 6:16 left in regulation, knocking in a jumper, but MSSU went back on top 54-53 when Jenson Maydew drained a three with 3:11 left to play.

Two straight layups from Winkelmann put UCM on top 57-55 with 25 seconds to play.

But on the Lions ensuing possession, Sharese Jones scored an old fashioned three point play, giving the lead back to Southern.

Needing to score to tie or take the lead, Winkelmann drove into the lane and drew a foul. She went 1-of-2 at the line to tie the score at 58 and send the game to overtime.

The extra frame was a high-scoring affair. Missouri Southern scored 13 of their 18 points from the free throw line, hitting 13-of-14 attempts.

One of the lone field goals for the Lions was a three from Kenya Wilson-Brown midway through the period to put MSSU up four, 65-61.

That lead got pushed to seven as the Lions kept knocking down free throws.

The Jens were able to cut it to three thanks to a layup from Jones with 32 seconds to play.

With the score 76-73 in favor of the Lions, MSSU turned the ball over on the sidelines following a Randle layup, giving UCM one final possession. Sydney Crockett's three-pointer to tie was blocked though, and the Lions walked off with the win.

The Jennies scored a majority of their points in the paint, getting 54 from under the glass. UCM hit only two three-point attempts, with their first coming in the fourth quarter. MSSU did their damage at the free throw line, hitting 22-of-28 attempts, including 13 in overtime.

Jones was the leading scorer for the game with 31 points. Deb Holcomb finished with 18 and had eight assists.

In the final week of the regular season the Jennies are on the road at Lindenwood Wednesday night, Feb. 24 and at Missouri Western for the regular season finale, Saturday, Feb. 27. Tip off for Wednesday night's game is 5:30 p.m. from St. Charles, Mo.
