ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Central Missouri Jennies Softball began their weekend in St. Cloud, Minn. at the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament. UCM took on Northern Sun rivals Minnesota-St. Mankato and Concordia-St. Paul on the first day of the tournament.
Central Missouri fell in both games, putting their record at 5-7 on the season.
Game One: MSU-Mankato 6, Central Missouri 0The Mavericks got started quickly with a run in the first off of Jennies starter
Emily Robinson. With two outs, Jess Meidl walked and stole a base then came around to score on an RBI single from Samantha Buhmann.
MSU added to their lead in the second inning. After retiring the first batter, three straight Mavericks singled with two scoring on the base knock from Karli DesLauriers. She scored the third run of the frame on a two-out single from Emily Bransky.
Mavericks starter Coley Reis kept the Jennies off the board. She threw all seven innings allowing two hits and striking out 12. Reis also started against UCM last season, picking up a win for MSU.
The Jennies offense struggled, tallying two hits, one from
Ali Jo Rogers who swiped her 14th bag of the season. The other from
Emily King who also reached on a walk.
Minnesota State tacked on two more in the sixth, scoring two runs on a Jennies throwing error.
Robinson pitched six innings giving up all six runs, three earned on seven hits. She struck out four and walked four.
UCM has one more game tonight inside the Husky Dome on the campus of St. Cloud State. The Jennies face Concordia-St. Paul with first pitch scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
Game Two: - Concordia-St. Paul 6, Central Missouri 2Concordia-St. Paul opened the scoring in the first inning putting up a three spot after scoring on a wild pitch and scored a pair of runs on a single from Liz Jarosz.
The Jennies tried to come back getting a run in each of the second and third innings.
Emily King doubled home
Makayla Schoonover who was pinch running after Robinson's lead off double.
Austin Eickleberry then opened the third inning with a bunt single. She moved to second on Rogers single, reached third on
Alexis Koop's sacrifice bunt and scored on
Alex Leonhart's groundout, making the score 3-2.
The score remained that way until the fifth when the Golden Bears added three more. Jarosz again had the big hit of the inning, a two-RBI double to right center putting CSP up by the winning score, 6-2.
Central Missouri scattered six hits from six different spots in the lineup. King and Robinson each hit a double.
Allison Tonyan got the start for UCM and threw 4.2 innings allowing all six runs on six hits. She walked three and struck out one.
Haley Schanks was the winning pitcher for the Golden Bears. She tossed a complete game surrendering six hits and two runs while striking out three and issuing one free pass.
Jarosz was 2-3 with a double, single and three RBI. Jamie Fleischhacker drew two walks and scored twice.
The Jennies have a single game Friday afternoon against host school St. Cloud State. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. inside the Husky Dome.
