TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Missouri had on their shooting shoes Wednesday night in Topeka. They took down Washburn, 86-75 behind 53.6% shooting and a season-best 68.4% from three. The win ends a two-game skid for the Jennies and puts them at 9-13 this season and 8-9 in the MIAA.
Five Jennies scored in double-figures led by
Shelby Winkelmann's 19. She also had six rebounds and six assists in the win.
Paige Redmond scored a career-high 16 points and
Ashley Jones also scored 16 on 7-of-9 shooting. Jones also led the team with eight rebounds.
Taylor Weiks led the three-point barrage for UCM. She finished 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and scored 13.
Danielle Randle was the fifth Jennie with 10+ points, scoring 11. She was 4-of-6 from the floor and 3-for-4 from deep.
The Jennies were on fire from the opening tip as Weiks knocked down a three on UCM's first possession. The hot shooting only continued from there.
Central Missouri put up 30 in the opening period, shooting 11-16 in the frame and 5-6 from beyond the arc.
Danielle Randle capped the period with a buzzer beating three pointer.
Randle wasn't satisfied with just one though, on the Jens first possession of the second period, Randle hit another three, building a 33-24 lead.
Both teams were going back-and-forth with Washburn shooting 63% and the Jens 58% in the half. The Ichabods were able to get the lead down to five, 50-45, hitting a three with under 10 seconds to play.
On the ensuing possession, Winkelmann ran the ball down the floor with the clock winding down and if once is good, twice is better, connected on the Jens second buzzer-beater of the game, taking a 53-45 lead into the half. The 53 points scored were the most for the Jennies in any half this season.
The Jennies were finally able to put some distance on the Ichabods in the third. They outscored Washburn 24-13 in the frame, shooting 10-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three.
UCM opened the second half on a 15-4 run, getting two three-pointers from Weiks, including a four-point play midway through the period. A Winkelmann layup with just under three minutes in the period put the Jennies up 20, 72-52. Randle hit her third three pointer of the game and UCM took a 19-point lead, 77-58 into the final period.
Things got dicey at the outset of the fourth period though. The Ichabods scored the first 13 points of the quarter, and cut the once-20 point lead, down to six with less than four minutes to play.
Ashley Duffy finally scored the Jennies first points of the period at the 3:45 mark with a layup to end the scoring drought, and Jones scored on an offensive rebound and put-back to bring the lead back to 10, 81-71.
From there the game was never in question as the Jennies went 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final 1:09 to put Washburn away 86-75.
Erin Dohnalek and Jharian Bowen led the Ichabods with 14 points. They shot 54.5% from the floor and 44.4% from three. Jayna Smith was the leading rebounder with 10.
The Jennies conclude their season-long four game road trip Saturday, February 13 as the travel to Bolivar, Mo. to take on Southwest Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
