Jennies Come Up Short at SBU, 68-65

BOLIVAR, Mo. – A desperation three from Shelby Winkelmann at the buzzer hit off the back of the iron as the Jennies fell 68-65 Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps a five game winning streak for UCM over the Bearcats, and puts UCM at 9-14 and 8-10 in the MIAA.

Ashley Jones was the Jennies leading scorer with 17 points. She recorded her eighth double-double of the season, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Winkelmann scored 16 points and Ashley Duffy chipped in 14.

The Jennies came out red hot to start the game, scoring the first seven points of the game. Tayler Weiks got the scoring going with a layup and Duffy knocked in a three.

The large lead evaporated quickly, as the Bearcats went on a 7-1 run of their own. After one period the Jennies held on to a slim, 19-18 lead. Jones scored seven points and had four rebounds in the first.

Central Missouri struggled in the second period, but the Bearcats weren't able to capitalize. UCM went cold after a Paige Redmond three, making just of their final six attempts of the period.

Southwest Baptist didn't shoot much better, and took a 33-31 lead into halftime.

The teams traded points to begin the second half before the Jennies used an 8-0 run to grab a four point lead, 39-35 midway through the frame. SBU bounced right back with a three from Megan Rosenbohm and a jumper to regain a 40-39 lead.

SBU held that one point lead, 49-48 after three periods.  They then scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter and eventually took their largest lead of the game, 60-50.

The Jennies hit their first field goal of the half at the 6:05 mark on a layup from Duffy and began their comeback charge

With just under two minutes to play, Weiks knocked down a pair of free throws to close the gap to two, 64-62. Weiks again hit two free throws to cut the lead to one, 66-65 with 45 seconds to play.

UCM had a golden opportunity to take the lead when the Bearcats turned the ball over, but Winkelmann came up empty on two shots in the paint.

After the Bearcats hit two free throws with 1.6 seconds to play, Winkelmann took a deep three that nearly dropped, but hit iron to end the game.

Caylee Richardson scored a game-high 22 points for SBU. She was 9-of-11 from the field and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Megan Rosenbohm scored 13 points off the bench.

Central Missouri finally returns home next week to face Pittsburg State, Wednesday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
