WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Nov. 5, 2016) - Over two hours of volleyball came down to the final minutes as the No. 16 Jennies and No. 13 Washburn Ichabods battled Saturday afternoon. Trailing for much of the final set, Washburn came from behind to take a 3-2 win (25-19, 24-26, 15-25, 25-16, 12-25), and move the Jennies to 8-7 in the MIAA and 19-9 overall.
The Jennies were once again led by
Kylie Hohlen who set a new career-high with 18 kills and 64 attempts.
Kourtney Thompson came within two kills of a triple-double with eight kills, 16 digs and a game-high 46 assists.
Maddie Jones was also in double-figure kills with 12. Central Missouri out-hit the Ichabods .154 to .139, but the Ichabods were able to knock down 16 blocks to help their cause.
Both teams played well on the defense end and each came away with more than 100 team digs.
Carly Offerdahl finished with a new career-best and match-high 32. She was one of five Jennies with double-figure digs. In addition to Offerdahl and Thompson, Hohlen picked up her sixth double-double of the year with 23 digs,
Abby Skrastins notched 12 and
Katie Carlson added 10.
Kasey Hohlen led UCM with four of their seven blocks.
The Jennies came out strong and looked to be in total control of the match for much of the first two sets. The Jens used a 5-2 run to break away from the Ichabods in set one, taking their largest lead to that point, 15-10. The Jennies final three points all came from Ichabod attack errors and they took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win.
Central Missouri looked to go up 2-0 and were at set point, 24-21, but a service error opened the flood gates and the Ichabods scored five straight points to steal the set, 26-24.
Kylie Hohlen picked up five kills in the frame.
With momentum on their side, Washburn dominated the third set, never trailing in a 25-15 win. Ahead by only two, 12-10, the Ichabods went on a 9-2 run to go up 21-12 and put the set away.
Despite two straight set losses, it was the Jennies turn to rule set four. They quickly opened up an eight-point lead, 10-2, and cruised to a 25-16 set win, never trailing as they evened up the match.Â
Though the decisive fifth set is only played to 15, the frame saw six ties and four lead changes. After trading points at the start, Central Missouri went on a 5-2 spurt to take their largest lead, 10-7. After a Washburn timeout, the Ichabods scored three straight to tie, helped out by a pair of Jennies attack errors. UCM called a timeout to regroup, but the Ichabods again scored three out of the break and that was enough to hold off the Jennies, 15-12. Of the Jennies 29 attack errors in the game, eight came in the final set.
Washburn had four with double-digit kills led by Kelsey Barrick's 16. Leanna Willer added 12, Megan Pedersen 11 and Sarah Vicory 10. Alyssa Carney picked up 31 digs for the Ichabods and Natalie Bates and Shayla Conner shared setting duties with Bates passing out 27 assists and Conner 21. Vicory also added 10 blocks including four solo for a double-double.
Its a quick turnaround for Central Missouri who travel to St. Charles next Tuesday, Nov. 8 for an MIAA matchup with Lindenwood. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
