WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Senior
Carly Sojka had a career-night as she landed a new high 27 kills in the Jennies 3-1 win over Missouri S&T (25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 25-12). Sojka also dug out 17 attacks, to record her second double-double of the season. With Sojka's help the Jennies improved to 9-1 in their first 10 games. The nine wins in 10 matches is the second most for the Jennies since 1996.
In addition to Sojka, junior
Maddie Jones put down a season-high 13 kills and hit .414 for the match. Junior
Kourtney Thompson totaled more than 40 assists for the second time this season with a match-high 47. She also picked up a season-high 14 digs for her first double-double of the season. Senior
Lauren Dudgeon also chipped in with a season-high eight kills.
Defensively, five Jennies recorded 10+ digs. Senior
Annie Reilly led the way with 22. Junior
Haley Thompson put down six total blocks as the Jennies tallied nine blocks as a team, a season-high.
UCM stormed out of the gates in the opening set, grabbing a quick, 5-1 lead, on the strength of two Jones kills. The Miners fought back though and evened the match at nine-all. After going back-and-forth the Jennies finally put together a 4-1 run to regain a three-point edge. UCM put the match away scoring five straight points to open a 24-16 lead, and took the first frame 25-19.
The second set saw the Miners take the lead early and hold it for most of the set. Trailing by six at 15-9, UCM went on a 10-3 run to grab their first lead since early in the set at 19-18. UCM stayed hot after getting the lead and scored five of the final six points to claim a 25-20 win and go ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Jennies led by as many as five at 14-9 in the third set, but the Miners clawed back to take their only set of the match. Missouri S&T scored seven-straight at one point to claim a 23-18 lead. The Jens tried to come back, getting to within three at 24-21, but the Miners landed a kill to take the frame.
After three close sets, the Jennies grabbed a lead and ran away in the fourth. Up by one at 5-4, UCM opened a seven-point lead at 13-6 and never looked back. They cruised to a 25-12 win to earn their ninth victory in ten matches.
The Jens held Missouri S&T to a .097 attack percentage for the match. Carlie Combs was the team's leading scorer with 16 kills and recorded a double-double by tallying 20 digs.
UCM hits the road again for their final regular-season tournament before conference play. They head to Russellville, Ark. for the Arkansas Tech Regional Crossover. Their first match is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18 against Harding at 1 p.m. They'll also play host school Arkansas Tech and Harding over the two day event.
