WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Mules got a great start to their weekend series with Lincoln by sweeping a doubleheader on Thursday at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. The Mules won the opener 4-3 before taking the nightcap 14-2.
The Mules (17-14, 13-9 MIAA) jumped on top of the Blue Tigers (1-27, 1-17 MIAA) in game one with three runs in the third inning.
Trevor Jones had an RBI single to start the scoring. He later scored on
Tony Sandifer's RBI groundout and
Derek Cornell added an RBI single in the frame.
The lead stood until the fifth when Lincoln plated three runs to tie the game. Nick Lovell had an RBI double to left and Dillon Walker brought home the tying runs with a double down the right field line.
The game was tied until the bottom of the sixth when
John Oliver hit his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to left, to give the Mules a 4-3 lead.
Grant Gavin (2-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing 1.2 innings allowing two hits while striking out two.
Trevor Ezell recorded the final out of the game for his team-leading seventh save of the season. Starter
Carlos D'Armas allowed three runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work. He struck out six and walked two.
Game two was all Central Missouri as the Mules jumped on top with a pair of first inning runs. Jones led off the game with his first home run of the season and Sandifer scored on
Bennett Oliver's RBI single to right.
The Blue Tigers cut the lead in half in the third on Kolton Clark's RBI single, but the Mules came right back in the bottom half with three runs to grab a 5-1 lead. Sandifer had an RBI double, scored on a throwing error and J. Oliver added a sac fly for UCM.
The Mules tallied five runs in the fifth to blow the game wide open. B. Oliver belted a two-run home run, his second of the year to start the scoring.
Colin Frederick had an RBI single and Jones added a two-run single.
UCM plated four more runs in the sixth for a 14-1 lead. Cornell scored on a wild pitch,
Jackson Schnurbusch had an RBI single and Jones had a two-run single. The Blue Tigers plated one run in the seventh on Christian Bunch's RBI single, but that was all they would get.
Tyler House (3-2) tossed six innings, allowing just four hits and one run to earn his third win of the season. He struck out nine and walked just one in the game. Adam Stegeman (0-2) took the loss for LU after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.
Jones finished the day with four hits and six RBI to lead UCM. B. Oliver was 2-for-3 with three RBI in game two.
