TOPEKA, Kan. - The No. 13 Central Missouri Jennies won by a sweep for the fourth straight match, this time defeating No. 9 Washburn. It's the second time in as many weeks UCM has defeated an AVCA top-25 team, last week defeating No. 12 Central Oklahoma, also 3-0. UCM won by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-23 to move to 24-4 on the season and 12-3 in the MIAA.
Carly Sojka was the Jennies offensive leader, knocking 15 kills. She also racked up 12 digs to record her 11th double-double of the season.
Maddie Jones was also in double-figures with 11 kills.
Kourtney Thompson was at the center of the offense with 37 assists.
Defensively, the Jens put back nine total blocks, led by
Kasey Hohlen's five block assists. The team totaled 16 block assists with six Jennies recording at least two.
Annie Reilly finished with a game-high 18 digs.
The opening set saw nine ties and six lead changes, mostly at the outset. With the match tied 13-13, the Jennies closed out on a 12-2 run, including a 6-0 stretch, to go up 1-0 in the match with a 25-15 win.
The second set was all UCM as they scored the first point on a kill from Jones and never trailed
cruising to a 25-16 win. Central Missouri scored eight of the first ten points in the set to take an 8-2 lead. WU tried to get back into the set, cutting the lead down to four at 9-5 and 14-10, but could come no closer and UCM went up 2-0.
UCM took their first lead in the third set at 4-3 and held on for a tight 25-23 win. The Jens were up by as many as five, 11-6, but the Ichabods were able to come back and remain close. Washburn finally tied the set at 17-all, but UCM was able to quickly go back on top. At match point, 24-21, UCM had Washburn on the ropes. The Ichabods were able to score two on a pair of UCM errors, but
Cheyanne Lyons ended the match with her sixth kill.
The Jennies return home for a Tuesday night match against Lindenwood. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
