KEARNEY, Neb. – Jennies senior
Carly Sojka entered Saturday night needing just nine kills to become the 10
th Jennie in Central Missouri history to reach 1500 career kills. She landed the milestone kill in the second set of the Jennies 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 26-24, 17-19) loss at Nebraska Kearney. The Jens fall to 20-4 on the season and 8-3 in the MIAA.
Five Jennies recorded double-digit kills as Sojka,
Kasey Hohlen and
Cheyanne Lyons all notched 16.
Maddie Jones (15) and
Kylie Hohlen (12) also were in double figures.
Kasey Hohlen and Lyons both recorded career-bests. Sojka and
Kylie Hohlen each picked up 17 digs to earn a double-double.
Kourtney Thompson chauffeured the offense setting a new career high with 63 assists. Her previous high of 62 came in the Jennies first match this season with UNK. Thompson has 125 assists in the two matches with the Lopers. She also had a double-double with 15 digs.
Defensively,
Annie Reilly led the way with 29 digs. UCM set a season-high with 98 digs total digs.
Shelby Winkelmann also chipped in with 17. The Jens outblocked UNK 10.5-to-5. Jones and
Kasey Hohlen led the team with five total blocks each.
The Jennies used a late run at the end of the first set to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. Neither team took more than a two-point lead in the back-and-forth set. After the Lopers took a 23-22 lead, the Jennies scored three straight points, getting two kills and a block from Jones to gain a 1-0 edge. Jones and
Kylie Hohlen each had five kills in the set.
The second set was a repeat of the first from the outset. After a Sojka kill brought the Jennies to within one, 13-12, the Lopers went on a 4-0 run to take their largest lead of the set, 17-12. Following a timeout, UCM began to mount a comeback, quickly getting back to within one, 18-17. That was as close as they came though as UNK put the set away by scoring seven of the final ten points and tying the match.
The Lopers came out strong in the third set. They used a 10-2 run to take a 13-5 lead and remained in charge of the set, as they went up 2-1 in the match with a 25-19 win.
The Jennies needed to come back on a couple of occasions to push the match to a fifth set. The Lopers took a five-point lead, 18-13, before the Jens used a 6-1 stretch to tie the set at 19-19. UNK went back on top, 23-21, just two points from sealing the match, but UCM tied it up again at 24-24 and kills from
Kasey Hohlen and Lyons ensured a fifth set.
Both teams were trading points at the beginning of the fifth set, but UNK maintained a slight edge in the early going. The Jennies took their first lead since 3-2 when Sojka landed a kill to go up 10-9. UNK tied the set at 13-all and again at 14-all as the teams went to extra points for the second straight set. In the end, it was the Lopers who were able to come out on top with a 19-17 win.
Central Missouri is back in action next weekend when they host No. 10 Central Oklahoma Friday, Oct. 30 and Pittsburg State Saturday, Oct. 31.
