No. 13 Jennies Volleyball Finishes Weekend with Sweep of SBU

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - No. 13 Jennies volleyball earned their third consecutive sweep Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-15, 25-20) over Southwest Baptist. The win moves the Jens to 19-3 on the season and 7-2 in the MIAA.

Maddie Jones was UCMs offensive leader putting down 13 kills  with a .571 attack percentage. For the second straight match, UCM held its opponent to a hitting percentage under .100 as the Bearcats hit .041 as a team. UCM hit a combined .229 for the match.

Carly Sojka was also in double-figures with 10 kills and earned a double-double with 11 digs. Kourtney Thompson was involved in the offense landing seven kills and handing out 25 assists. Annie Reilly (22) and Kylie Hohlen (21) each finished with over 20 digs.

The Jennies ran away with the first two sets, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the match. The Jens quickly got up by 10 on the Bearcats in the opening frame, 15-5 and cruised to a 25-14 win. Sojka and Hohlen each had four kills and Reilly had 12 of her 22 digs. SBU remained close in the early going of the second set, but with a 13-9 advantage, the Jens outscored SBU 12-6 the rest of the way and went up two sets to none with a 25-15 win.

The third set was a tight battle with seven ties and two lead changes. Jones was the difference maker, smashing eight of her 13 kills in the set. With the score tied, 18-18, the Jennies got three straight points on a Jones block, Thompson kill and Hohlen service ace, extending their lead to three and forcing an SBU timeout. UCM scored the first two points out of the break and SBU couldn't make up the difference as the Jens took the match by a score of 25-20.

UCM has now won three straight matches and will head out on the road for two more matches next weekend. The Jens face Fort Hays State Friday, Oct. 23 before a rematch with Nebraska-Kearney Saturday, Oct. 24.
