No. 8 Jennies’ soccer claims 2011 MIAA Tournament Title
Box Score (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – The eighth ranked University of Central Missouri Jennies (19-1-0) claimed the 2011 MIAA Postseason Tournament Title Sunday afternoon at Durwood Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, defeating Missouri Southern (9-10-2), 3-1, to complete a perfect record against MIAA opponents for 2011.
The Jennies got things going in the 41st minute after Sarah Hotop (Mexico, Mo.) controlled the ball on the left side of the goal box and inched it past Missouri Southern goalkeeper Randi Rusell into the back of the net for her second goal this season, putting Central Missouri on-top 1-0. That would be the score at half-time.
The Jennies held the Lions to no shots in the first half, outshooting Missouri Southern 10-0. Central Missouri also had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half of play.
The second half started quick for the Lions, as they netted the equalizer just 19-minutes into the half, in the 59th-minute, after Kelly White broke away with the ball and eased it past Jennies' goalkeeper Brooke Cooley (Alton, Ill.), knotting the score up, 1-1. The score wasn't tied for long though. A mere 10-minutes later, in the 68th minute, Jenna Stones (Olathe, Kan.) placed a free kick just out of reach of Missouri Southern goalie Abby Risner, netting her second goal of the season and putting the Jennies back in the lead, 2-1. Central Missouri added an insurance goal 13-minutes later, in the 81st-minute when Kristin Bright (Fenton, Mo.) corralled the ball off  the goal post and hammered it into the back of the net for her sixth goal this year, increasing the Jennies lead to 3-1 which would prove to be the score when full-time was reached.
For the match, Central Missouri outshot Missouri Southern 18-4, including 11 shots on-goal, with a 4-0 corner kicks advantage. Jennies' goalie Brooke Cooley netted three saves for the match, all in the second half, and improved her overall record in goal to 19-1-0 with the win.
With the victory, the Jennies match their 2010 season win total with 19 and clinch the MIAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Division-II National Tournament.
The Jennies, ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA Poll and third in the NCAA-II South-Central Regional rankings, will find out their opponent and site for the opening round of regional play Monday evening (6:30 p.m.) when the NCAA releases the entire tournament field.
