(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) – Sophomore
Taylor Goodness had a career night, collecting 19 kills and leading the seventh-ranked Central Missouri Jennies to their fifth straight victory, with a 25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 25-11 win over the Missouri Western Griffons. The win marked UCM's 18
th out of the last 19 matches.
The Jennies looked on their way to another straight-set win early in the opening set, after quickly taking a 9-3 lead, highlighted by four Griffon attack errors. The Jens maintained a comfortable lead throughout the first set, as Missouri Western was never able to put together a strong run.
The second set was a different story, however; even after taking the first four points, and leading in the first half of the set, the Griffons capitalized of a few Jennie attack errors to string together five straight points and gain a 13-11 edge. UCM was able to stay close, and took a 22-21 lead after a kill from senior
Kelsey Ortwerth, but then gave up four straight points to drop the set, 25-22.
Central Missouri returned to form in the third set, taking the lead early and not giving it up throughout the set. Missouri Western was able to tie the score at 21-21, but three straight kills from Ortwerth, Goodness and
Julia Bates gave the Jens match point, which they wrapped up three plays later, 25-23. The fourth set was all UCM, stringing together four runs of four points or more, as the Jennies reached match point before Missouri Western had double-digits on the scoreboard. Ortwerth ended the match with her seventh kill of the night, at 25-11.
Seniors
Allie Huffman and
Paula Harris both reached double figures in kills, recording 11 and 10, respectively. Sophomore setter
Julia Bates finished with 40 assists on the night, reaching the 40-plus mark for the 10th time this season. Defensively, Ortwerth (16),
Taylor Krejci (14), and
Jamie Haworth (10) all recorded double-digit digs.
The win improves UCM's record to 23-4 on the year, and 12-1 in MIAA play. The Jennies return home tomorrow night to welcome the Northwest Missouri Bearcats, starting at 6:30 p.m.
