Mules roll to 2-0 record with 94-68 win over Saint Mary

Box Score (WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Five Central Missouri Mules scored in double figures as the Mules rolled to a 94-68 win over Saint Mary (Kan.) on Tuesday night at the UCM Multipurpose Building to improve to 2-0 on the season.
            The Mules scored the first five points of the game to grab the lead for good. The Spires (3-1) pulled back to within a pair at 7-5, but a pair of free throws from Dominique Long sparked a 9-2 run to give UCM a 16-7 lead with 14:23 to play in the opening half.
            The lead was six at 19-13 when the Mules rattled off seven quick points to extend the lead to 26-13 with just over 10 minutes left in the period. USM trimmed the lead back to nine, but UCM went on a 14-0 run to take a 40-17 lead with 4:43 remaining in the half. The Mules led 45-23 at the break.
            Central Missouri opened the second half on a 12-4 run to grab the biggest lead of the game at 57-27 with 16:19 to play. The Spires scored six straight points, but the Mules pushed the lead back to 30 at 65-35 with 12:38 remaining in regulation.
            A 25-8 run by Saint Mary over the next six plus minutes cut the lead to 73-60 with 6:20 to play. The Mules responded with a 14-0 run of their own to push the lead back to 27 at 87-60 with two and half minutes to play and UCM cruised to the 26-point win.
            Long led the Mules with 17 points and also had seven rebounds. Boo Hunter had 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including four three pointers. Lance Beckwith had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Reggie Stallings and Alex Dean each had 10 points. Widgett Washington added eight points and a career-high seven assists.
            UCM shot 50 percent for the game, 31-of-62, but was just 8-of-25 for 32 percent from three point range. The Mules made 24-of-32 free throws for 75 percent and out-rebounded the Spires 41-34.
            Manuel Barnes led all scorers with 18 points to lead Saint Mary. The Spires were 21-of-59 from the floor (35.6 percent) and 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from beyond the arc. USM also made 19-of-23 from the charity stripe for 82.6 percent.
            The Mules forced USM into 18 turnovers and had 19 assists. UCM also had 38 points in the paint compared to 24 for the Spires.
            Central Missouri is back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when Central Methodist comes to the UCM Multipurpose Building. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday night at 7 p.m., but had to be rescheduled because of the Jennies hosting the South Central Volleyball Regional.
