No. 8 Jennies knock off Missouri Western in straight sets
(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The Jennies faced one of their tougher challengers in recent memory, but were able to defeat the Missouri Western Griffons, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 in the UCM Multipurpose Building Friday night. The match was the tenth straight victory for the Jennies, who remain perfect in MIAA play. Senior hitter Allie Huffman led the Jens with 19 kills and a .370 hitting percentage.
The first set went the Jennies way with relative ease, as Bradye Peniston's kill that tied the match at 3-3 was the closest the Griffons would come. Central Missouri would lead from start to finish of the second set, as Huffman posted eight of her 19 kills. Four Jennies – Huffman, Peniston, Taylor Goodness, and Paula Harris – all had hitting percentages of over .500 and no errors.
In what was the most competitive set in nearly a month, The Griffons led as late as 22-21, threatening to take the first set from Central Missouri since the five-set loss to Tampa earlier this season. A pair of kills from Harris and Huffman quickly gave the Jennies the lead at 23-22, then a Griffon attack error set up Huffman's match-clinching kill.
The win improves Central Missouri's record to 6-0 in the MIAA, and 15-3 overall. The win was the team's tenth straight this season, 13th consecutive against conference opponents, and 31st consecutive against Missouri-based universities. The Jennies are back in action tomorrow night, when they host the Division-I Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks in a non-conference battle, starting at 6:30 p.m.
