Box Score
(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The number 10 University of Central Missouri Jennies (15-1-0, 7-0-0 MIAA) rolled to a 6-1 win over Missouri Southern (5-9-1, 5-2-0 MIAA) Saturday night in front of 507 fans for senior night and the final regular season home match at the South Recreation Complex.
The first half started fast for Central Missouri. Just 17 minutes into the match, Becky Lackey (St. Peter's, Mo.) found the back of the net on a rebound shot to put the Jennies up 1-0. It was Lackey's ninth goal of the season. Central Missouri wasn't done scoring though, by far, as just eight minutes later, in the 29th minute, senior Sharaya Sidebottom (Blue Springs, Mo.) corralled a pass from Jenna Stones (Olathe, Kan.) on a fast break and hammered it past Missouri Southern goalkeeper Randi Russell increasing the UCM lead to 2-0 and pick up her first goal of 2011. Stones' assist marked her third overall. Sidebottom's goal opened up the floodgates for the Jennies, as they scored two more goals in the next four minutes. Senior Alyssa Rhodes (Olathe, Kan.) headed a perfect corner kick from Kayla Shain (Olathe, Kan.) to the back of the net in the 31st minute to put Central Missouri on top 3-0. The goal was Rhodes' team-high 11th of the season and the pass by Shain was her seventh assist of the season. It only took two-minutes for the Jennies to find the goal again. Jennifer Huber (Wildwood, Mo.) put the Jennies up 4-0 in the 33rd minute, scoring the first goal of her career as a Jennie.
Missouri Southern got into the scoring frenzy three-minutes later, in the 36th minute, as Dana Wilhelm forced a shot into the goal to put Missouri Southern on the board, 6-1, heading into half-time.
For the half, the Jennies outshot the Lions 10-3, with a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half started slowly for both teams as neither team had a shot until the 61st minute. Central Missouri finally found the goal in the 71st minute though when Becky Lackey controlled a perfectly fed cross-pass from senior Sarah Hotop (Mexico, Mo.) and blasted it into the left side of the net to increase the Jennie lead to 5-1. The goal was Lackey's second of the evening and tenth overall this season. Hotop's assist was her first for 2011.
The Jennies struck one more time in the match after senior Cara Hennahane (Leawood, Kan.) drilled a penalty-kick past Missouri Southern goalie Abby Risner in the 85th minute to give Central Missouri the 6-1 lead.
Jennies senior Katie O'Keefe (Olathe, Kan.), who suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier in the season, was able to check into the match in the 89th minute and be on the pitch for the final minute of the Jennies 6-1 win.
Central Missouri outshot Missouri Southern 16-4 in the match, with 11 of those shots being on-goal and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Jennies' goalkeeper Brooke Cooley (Alton, Ill.) picked up her 15th win in-goal to improve her overall record to 15-1-0. The six goals by the Jennies are the most scored since the 2010 season when the Jennies defeated Missouri Southern 6-0 in Joplin.
With the win, the Jennies clinch no-worse than the two-seed in the MIAA Postseason Soccer Tournament, November 3-6 at Durwood Stadium on the University of Missouri-Kansas City Campus and will either play Friday, November 4th at 1 p.m. or 4 p.m.
